Letterman Issues On-Air Apology to Wife

10/5/2009 7:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

David Letterman David Letterman issued a "sincere apology" to his wife during the monologue of his show earlier today -- wasting no time in addressing his controversial handling of the extortion plot against him.

It was Dave's first show back since he admitted to having sexual relationships with multiple female members of his staff.

Several audience members claim Dave went on "at length" about his situation, sometimes using humor ... and sometimes getting serious.

Letterman also apologized to the women who work on his show, telling the audience he's worried that people will think he hooked up with women who were never really involved with him.

I knew he had a big ego, or why would he think we all think, he was involved with most all his staff. Superstud, himself. lol!!
Really Dave get over yourself, if it wasn't for your having that tv show and so being the top dog or boss, none of those women would have bothered with you.

I'm behind him all the way. He's brilliantly quick minded. Conan acts like a retarded child, and his sidekick is funnyier. Dave did this before his marraige and I believe the child as well, quite a while back. He was a single man and the women were full grown adult women with minds of their own.

Dave has one of the sexiest things there is, and its NOT a big bank account, it's a quick, sharp FUNNY mind! I'd do him in an instant!

I can't get over people saying, 'its not a big deal, it happened before he was married anyway'. Lets not forget that he was with his wife for 23 years before they got married. Being with someone for that long is a commitment in itself, and it is nothing to be glib about. I am sure that Regina doesn't think to herself 'oh well, its not a big deal anyway because we weren't married yet'. Whether you have said the vows or not it is wrong to cheat on the person you are with. Assuming otherwise is disrespectful to all parties involved. Don't give Letterman an easy pass just because he wasn't technically married yet.
