Leno and NBC Strike 1 Hour 'Tonight' Deal

1/14/2010 10:43 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Jay Leno has made a new deal with NBC, which gives him "The Tonight Show" from 11:35 - 12:35 ... sources tell TMZ.

As we first reported, under the contract Jay had been working under, he was guaranteed the 10 PM hour. By moving him to 11:35, NBC was in breach of his contract and needed to negotiate a new deal. That is now done, sources tell TMZ.

So Conan O'Brien is out, and Jay is restored.

This makes me so mad. First of all it not Conan's fault Jay tanked in prime time its his. I guaranttee if you put Conan in at 10 it would of been a success. This is bull crap you give Conan the Job of his dreams he moves his whole family from NYC to California and then you take it away from him this is not fair. I feel so bad for Conan and his family and will not watch Jay Leno he is bore. Thanks for wrecking late night NBC and messing with people lives. This makes my red headed temper boil!!!

Thank goodness...

Blaming Leno in the first place was utterly asinine. Here are the facts:

1. Leno absolutely DOMINATED late-night ratings for over a decade.

2. Conan could barely handle Craig Ferguson, let alone Letterman.

3. I am still wondering why all of these "Team Conan" supporters don't actually watch the show, because the sad fact of the matter is that he has NEVER had good ratings, no matter what time slot he was put in.

4. The media's portrayal of Leno as a villian in this debacle is absolutely astounding; what's worse is the American public's eagerness to agree with them.

people need to get the facts right... to simplify

1) when NBC decided to go with Jay over Letterman to succeed Carson when he chose to retire, Letterman was already a fixture on TV airing after Carson.

Leno was a stand-up comic who sometimes substituted for Johnny's nights off-so did Joan Rivers and a few others
so it naturally took a while for Leno to establish himself and get good ratings

Conan came with a built in audience to the Tonight Show hour but sadly didn't keep the ratings

2) in 2004 when Conan was negotiating with NBC he let it be known that if he wasn't going to host the Tonght Show he'd jump networks.

So NBC renewed his contract agreeing to 2009 as being when he'd get it. That meant that Jay had to agree to step aside (so he didn't decide out of thin air that he just wanted to retire at such a young age with a large following)

Leno graciously went on air discussing how he would "retire" from the show and hand it over to his deserving friend Conan- even had Conan on showing him support and great loyalty to the network that was pushing him out

He purposely did that so that when Conan took over he wouldn't have all negative press and controversy that he experienced years prior.

3) fast forward to 2009 and Leno is consistently beating Letterman in the ratings so NBC, so knowing that Leno would have a great offer from another network and become competition, it dawned on NBC that they had better figure out a way to to keep him and still honor what they negotiated with Conan years before

4) that's when they came up with the idea of Leno in Primetime.
NBC wasn't winning those ratings so they thought it was a worthwhile "experiment"

Leno's ratings were great when you compared them to the other late night audiences-so he held his own very well in that regard
But when you compared his ratings to the dramas on opposite him on the other networks at 10, they weren't as high naturally

Conan's ratings did not live up to hopes and expectations- he kept losing to Letterman

5) it's all about the $$$$
because of NBC trying to keep Conan from leaving in 2004, they sadly created their own domino effect downfall and ensuing disaster and controversy

so people should do some research before they spout off condemning Jay or Conan for the whole debacle

sad that NBC has ended up putting the 2 of them in this position with all the ensuing controversy-there is no villain here-both decent talented guys with different styles appealing to different audiences-that's why the 2 back to back at late night were such a winning combination for NBC

there should be heads rolling over at NBC for such a major screw-up and leaving 2 top talents hanging in the wind

they could at least make an official statement to explain how they got into this mess by trying to keep both of their major talents (in other words the ratings and $$ from the sponsors associated with the 2 shows) with their NBC family!!

Jay is super. The only reason I tune in to NBC. NBC should never have given the Tonight Show to Conan. I never watch Conan. He is too silly. Lay Off Jay. He is the victim here!!!!!

I am thrilled to have such a talented and gifted man back where he belongs. Jay is comedy and he knows how to capture the audience once he goes out there. Conan was never funny and his antics are boring. I had to switch to Letterman just to escape Conan's lack of talent. Jay is the king of comedy and he will rule forever!

This sucks for Conan. NBC and Leno deserve each other. Leno should bow out and leave Conan to build the show he was promised five years ago. Of course it will take a while to build up a viewership, and it's asinine of NBC to start swapping shows around like this when it was their own scheduling debacle that got them to this point. In the end NBC and Leno will suffer from all of this bad press and Conan will thrive on a far superior network and format.

I am so disappointed. I refuse to watch Jay and his mugging, smarmy delivery of jokes that have been watered and dumbed down for the masses. With Conan, I never feel pandered to. Conan also showed a lot of class with the statement he released a few days, against the wishes of advisors. I don't blame Jay or Conan for any of this, as neither of them instigated this. The fault lies with NBC, and most of the blame assigned there should fall exactly where it belongs, squarely upon the shoulders Jeff Zucker, who's been acting like a child throwing a tamtrum. http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/jeff-zucker-threatens-to-ice-conan-ill-keep-you-off-the-air-for-3-12-years/

I don't know why everyone is mad at Jay. Shouldn't your anger be directed towards Jeff Zucker and the rest of the NBC brainiacs?

I never would have pegged Leno as such a self righteous pos...Looking forward to see how long his next run on the Tonight Show will last. I'm betting less than 6 months.

Conan stole from Jay, Jay stole it back. It's funny seeing the thief play the victim Conan has no class.

How did he steal it from Jay? It was passed on to him like it was passed on to Jay. But hey when he got it over Letterman I guess Jay actually STOLE it first.

Sad they make this move hoping to help rating but will end up losing in the long run. The people at NBC must not be thinkers.
