Brittany Murphy Death - 'Preventable'

2/4/2010 3:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Brittany Murphy's Cause of DeathSources involved in Brittany Murphy's autopsy tell TMZ her death was "preventable."

Sources say the primary causes of Murphy's death were pneumonia and severe anemia. L.A. County Coroner officials believe Brittany's condition was "treatable" but no one took her to the hospital in time.

As for the multiple drugs found in her system, we're told they were both prescription, including medicine for cramps, and over-the-counter medications, including cough syrup. Our sources say the drugs "pushed her over the line" but the underlying problems were the pneumonia and anemia.

In other words, Brittany was really sick, didn't get treatment and by self-medicating it pushed her over the line.

There are also different types of anemia:

* Iron deficiency anemia. This common form of anemia affects about 1 to 2 percent of adults in the United States. The cause is a shortage of the element iron in your body. Your bone marrow needs iron to make hemoglobin. Without adequate iron, your body can't produce enough hemoglobin for red blood cells. The result is iron deficiency anemia.
* Vitamin deficiency anemias. In addition to iron, your body needs folate and vitamin B-12 to produce sufficient numbers of healthy red blood cells. A diet lacking in these and other key nutrients can cause decreased red blood cell production. Additionally, some people are unable to effectively absorb B-12.
* Anemia of chronic disease. Certain chronic diseases — such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease and other chronic inflammatory diseases — can interfere with the production of red blood cells, resulting in chronic anemia. Kidney failure also can be a cause of anemia.
* Aplastic anemia. This very rare, life-threatening anemia is caused by a decrease in the bone marrow's ability to produce all three types of blood cells — red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Many times, the cause of aplastic anemia is unknown, but it's believed to often be an autoimmune disease.
* Anemias associated with bone marrow disease. A variety of diseases, such as leukemia and myelodysplasia, a preleukemic condition, can cause anemia by affecting blood production in your bone marrow. The effects of these types of cancer and cancer-like disorders vary from a mild alteration in blood production to a complete, life-threatening shutdown of the blood-making process. Other cancers of the blood or bone marrow, such as multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative disorders and lymphoma, can also cause anemia.
* Hemolytic anemias. This group of anemias develops when red blood cells are destroyed faster than bone marrow can replace them. Certain blood diseases can cause increased red blood cell destruction. Autoimmune disorders can cause your body to produce antibodies to red blood cells, destroying them prematurely. Certain medications, such as some antibiotics used to treat infections, also can break down red blood cells.
* Sickle cell anemia. This inherited and sometimes serious anemia, which more commonly affects people of African, Arabic and Mediterranean descent, is caused by a defective form of hemoglobin that forces red blood cells to assume an abnormal crescent (sickle) shape. These irregular-shaped red blood cells die prematurely, resulting in a chronic shortage of red blood cells.
* Other anemias. There are several other, rarer forms of anemia, such as thalassemia and anemias caused by defective hemoglobin.

Um what is "anemias some sort of std..ewww" Geez.

Anemia is a condition characterized by abnormally low levels of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin (the component of red blood cells that delivers oxygen to tissues throughout the body)Being anemic makes one have awful muscle aches. Period time is a biznitch when you have severe anemia.

While people who suffer from anemia may see some relief by modifying their diet some folks struggle with it ...period diet or do diet.

While people seldom die from anemia (it usually a symptom of something greater) prolonged and untreated anemia is very bad for you and can lead to other ailments as the lack of a proper oxygen supply slowly degenerates major organs.

If Ms Murphy had struggled with anemia for an extended period of time she may very well have thought "O I have a really bad chest cold and am aching because I have anemia" Where in reality the lack of oxygen (from having pnemonia) combined with her already present inability to transport said oxygen throughout her bloodstream shut her down :( Instead of heading the warning signs her body was giving her she did what many of us do and tried to "take some over the counter stuff and maybe schedule an appointment with a doc after the holidays" Sadly...after the holidays was too late for her.

34. 29. Anemia is a common result of anorexia and starvation. She was too skinny. Anyone could see that.

You are an idiot! My husband is anemic and he is neither anorexic nor starved!

I didn't say it was the ONLY cause of anemia you moron. There are many , and anorexia is one of them. Sheesh!

"anemia is from iron-deficiency," ok, i'm guilty of being on this blog, but unless you're in the medical field, don't define medical conditions, etc. especially when it's done on some sort of a high horse, showing frustration at someone else who's equally clueless. anemia can be from a multitude of causes, iron deficiency being just one of literally hundreds. only the individuals who have her blood chemistries can intelligently guess what the cause was. if she was iron deficient, she may have had heavy periods, ie, not OBVIOUSLY anorexia. everyone who assumes someone got skinny b/c of cocaine and starvation (despite how prevalent this may be in hollywood) is most likely jealous.

You can't force a grown adult into medical attention. The lack of it is 100% Brittney's fault.

That said, I'm sure these findings will throw a BIG wrench into Husband's "She died from a heart attack caused by the stress of being fired by Warner Brothers" law suit.

Hey, Simon! She died because YOU FAILED to convince her that medical attention was necessary, you IDIOT!

Now that this is all over, the mother should kick Simon out of the house and go on about her life with Brittney's fortune.

Cough meds will stop your cough to the point of making the pneumonia even worse. Fluids then build in the lungs and eventually cause heart failure. They should take this stuff off the market.

How are so many of you blaming the husband and mother for this? Last i checked, Brittany Murphy was a grown woman. If she felt she needed to go to the doctors, she could have done so. Its not as if the mom and husband stopped her from going to the doctors.

She got sick, didnt know how sick she was because she didnt go to the doctor and instead tried to self medicate with over the counter drugs and it helped contribute to her death.

Thats what happens when you dont get yourself checked out. Around Christmas time i was so sick i could hardly get out of bed, but rather than wait and see if i get better and rely on over the counter medicine, i managed to drive MYSELF to the doctor and get checked out. She told me what was wrong with me, prescribe medicine, and i got better within a week.

If she realized how sick she was she would have taken herself to the doctor. But she didnt realize because she didnt get looked at by a doctor. Thats why you dont wait when you start to feel sick, you go get checked out right away before it gets worse.

So stop blamming the husband and mother, Brittany was a grown woman who could have taken herself to the doctor, insisted someone else take her or even had a doctor come to the house to check her out. She's not an infant.

my question is due to the fact that Brittanys death was preventable, could her Mother or Husband face any charges? and do you for see her husband getting a book deal about her life?

ok CAP was a part but she was self medicating. Remember it was pain killers and something else for cramps that she did have a valid script for. But mixing otc syrups that have Acetaminophen then add pain killers which most have acetaminophen also is a very bad thing.

They found Vicoprofen which has no APAP but Hydrocodone aka vicodin/norco depending on the make up ordered could have 325mg to 750mg's of APAP

FDA wants people to stay under 4000mg's a day in fear of overdose or major kidney damage.

People can OD on APAP alone at levels as low 10000 to 15000mgs a day. Thats not someone thats all messed up like she was. Add CAP and the other crap and doesn't take much...

I never wanted to say this before but he always looked like he was a oxy freak. The super pale skin and always clammy looking.. like a smack junky with no dark circles around his eyes..

Multiple drug intoxication refers specifically to intoxicants or interactions leading to intoxication. There are a few over the counter drugs, notably those containing opiate type components, and drugs like diphenhydramine, that when mixed with stronger painkillers will cause potential accidental overdose, or major intoxication.

For instance - some cough medicines contain diphenhydramine. "Multiple drug intoxication" strongly implies that stronger prescription drugs were involved and/or antagonised by over the counter drugs. Misuse of strong prescription drugs is just as dangerous and addictive as misuse of street drugs. Worse in a way. Hidden. Where she got them from, who prescribed them, and her boyfriend's denials of a problem, are suspicious.

Well alot of people take over the counter meds like cough syrup..and sounds like the prescription was for sounds like she really did die of pneumonia and anemia..yes she should have been taken to the hospital (and taken better care of herself) but doesn't sound to me at all that she died of multiple drug intoxication like they are making it sound...

TMZ quit trying to downplay or minimize the death results. It said that the secondary cause was "drug-intoxication" from self-medicating. It also said the exact drugs won't be revealed for another couple of weeks.
