Scotty Lago -- Apologize and Go ... Or Just Go!

2/21/2010 1:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

If Scotty Lago didn't volunteer to leave the Olympics, he'd have been told to leave by the U.S. Olympic Committee ... this according to sources close to Lago.

Lago offered up an apology after a mildly suggestive photo of him -- using his bronze medal for snowboarding to score chicks -- popped up on the Internet. He agreed to leave the Olympic Village on his own accord, but sources close to Lago tell TMZ he received an ultimatum from the U.S. Olympic Committee: either say you're sorry and go ... or get ejected from the Olympic Village.

As for when we might hear from Lago himself ... we're told he's in a "blackout period" -- meaning he can't talk about the incident at all until March 3.

A call to the USOC was not returned.

first of all snowboarders are mostly young athletes, were parting is a natural way to celebrate, and are no diff then anyone else. so what the guy is having some fun. its not like hes ripping a bong at a house party(like the great american hero, MICHAEL PHELPS or flipping off the crowd after his run). while this may not be the way all olympic athletes celebrate this is how scotty does. AND BEING A SCOTTY LAGO FAN TRUST ME THIS SEEMS TO BE AS MILD MANNERED AS HE GETS. he isnt even holding a fresh bottle of grey goose or any drink for that matter

@ 309 US might have the most medals but up front is Germany with 8 golds in front of the US with 7 and Norway with 6 golds. (Norway has only 5 mio inhabitants...I think they deserve the biggest respect here) But seriously nobody is jealous because some country wins more medals. You definitly didn't understand the olympic thought...

Good God how Victorian! I'm 70 years old, and I thought the photo was very amusing. Lago has a great sense of humor. The sporting world and the Olympic world would be greatly improved by developing the ability to laugh at itself and not to take itself so seriously. In this troubled times we need both an occasional satiric touch and an absence of pomposity. Go Scotty! Keep faith with your light-hearted, poobah-busting style. You are just what we all need. Don't let the bastards get you down. Jack

Keep the Olympic games pristine, strip him of his metal and bar him from the next games.

Re Scotty's impudence. It is high time the in-bred, pea-brained European nobility that run the International Olympic Committee got their stuffed shirts ripped open. The whole Olympic movement in the 21st century will be vastly improved when these relics from the ancien regieme return to their aristocratic palaces and get out of the business of dictating what is and what is not acceptable behavior for young Americans. The same goes for the uptight American Figure Skating Association, which is so afraid of sexuality that they act like the Hollywood censors of the 1930's. Once again, Bravo Scotty. You are setting an acceptable standard of behavior for youthful Americans and those of us who admire their style. Jack Septuagenarian

Another case of "rules and regs" taking the fun out of an activity. The IOC is busy policing, cautioning, ruling, testing and eliminating and the games are B-O-R-I-N-G! Its more interesting to read about the "rogues" on the net.
TMZ...satisfied???

As an esteemed measure of the best of the best's abilities in the sports world athletes should have certain moral standards as they represent a nation. Pride should show through their accomplishments not celebratory measures. What I think is crazy is that an olympic athlete medal winner or not thought this conduct befitting a national representative. What was he thinking dangling a world symbol of achievement in front of his penis and letting anyone kiss it in a public venue non the less? He should be ashamed, and so should everyone else that doesn't believe he represents you and the nation you live in!

I'm a 61 female and did not see anything wrong with the pictures that were taken.
My God he just won a medal and was partying.
Unlike some of the jerk kids on your show who insult you on air and act like you are stupid. My God you even pay them.
Your show has just ruined some kids career that he worked so hard for.
I hope your show is cancelled. Dumb A__ attorney.
