Dramatic 911 Tape -- NFL Star Helps Nab DUI Suspect

7/22/2010 3:58 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has obtained the recording of a dramatic 911 call made by Cleveland Browns lineman Shaun Rogers ... in which he helps local police safely arrest an allegedly super-drunk driver who was driving like a maniac.

Rogers made the call around 11:08 PM on July 15 -- warning that he was following a car that was swerving all over Interstate 71 ... and had blown a tire after smashing into the center divider.

During the call, Rogers directs law enforcement to his exact location -- and when the perp's car came to a stop in the middle of traffic, Rogers pulled up behind the other ride and activated his emergency lights to prevent a collision.

The suspect was eventually arrested on suspicion of DUI after blowing "extremely high" on a breath test.

Rogers was hailed as a hero by the local chief of police -- who sent the NFL star this letter to show his appreciation.

#36 I don't care what color the drunken ahole was, he was endangering everyone there that night as well as his own stupid self. If Rogers was being just a snitch, he would have just called it in and went on his way. Him stopping and activating his emergency lights behind the drunken ass after the idiot turned off his lights on a high speed lane no doubt averted disaster and was also brilliant thinking! Awesome!

Regarding the gun/airport incident, they are calling him a hero in this story, not a saint or an angel.

I did the same thing about 2 weeks ago...some douche drunkie fell asleep at a light with his foot on the brake and his car still on drive....I thought at first he was dead...I flagged down a cop and much to my surprise he was super drunk... I am happy to have taken him off the road that night too...Sad thing is he was 2 blocks from his house... DO NOT DRINK and get behind your car...you can change your life and the lives of others...

Yeah, everyone is happy and safe. But...stopping behind an alleged drunk driver in the fast lane, or half of it, at 11:15 at nite, in a dark SUV, is beyond idiotic.

Whenever I call to report drunk drivers NOTHING happens! I called about a guy on the PA Turnpike who was doing the same thing - all over three lanes. I was told they couldn't do anything since he exited off the turnpike but I could call 911 again if I continued to follow him. Isn't that what STATE POLICE are for? Needless to say, I'm glad they got this guy but I, for one, am not going to be bothered to call the police about drunk drivers anymore.

I wish there was more news like this - instead of the negative garbage we seem to see all the time.

Idiot!

Nice to see an NFL player helping out like he did. All we get to see is players being arrested for murder, assault, rape or cheating like reggie bush. I'm glad there's players out there that act in a civilly responsible way...

This is what should happen NFL makes tons of money for fines from players that do stupid stuff.. This fund/fine should be access and given a portion of to the HERO choice of charity. GOOD DEEDS ALSO NEED CONSEQUENCES then i would asume more people would try to do the right thing. CLEVELAND ROCKS but GO CHEIFS
