BMX Star T.J. Lavin in Coma After Major Crash

10/15/2010 11:29 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

1015_tj_lavin_bmx_youtube_thumb T.J. Lavin -- a BMX star and host of MTV's "The Challenge" -- is currently in a medically induced coma after losing control of his bike and crashing during a jump at a BMX event last night.

TJ Lavin
Lavin was competing in a Dew Tour event in Las Vegas -- when he hit a dirt ramp, lost control, and slammed down onto the ground. Friends and crew workers immediately rushed to Lavin's side, but he didn't appear to be moving.

Lavin was rushed to nearby University Medical Center hospital ... where he was placed into a medically induced coma.

We're told Lavin is also experiencing brain swelling and is listed in critical condition.

UPDATE: A rep for MTV tells us,
“Our thoughts are with TJ. He is an important part of MTV’s extended family and we’re all praying for him."

As for Lavin's condition, a rep for the Dew Tour tells us, "he is in the intensive care unit and is currently stabilized."

Sh#t like this always seems to happen to good folk. Why couldn't it have been Lindsay Lohan (better yet - DINA), Snoooooookie, OKXwhatever.... or someone equally as vile?

these jumps are a hard sand/clay compound which is hard packed so thats why you seen barely any dirt come up.what he fell onto was the equivalent of black top.the reason for it being so packed is so bike wheels wont get caught in soft sand or ruts.i BMX`d skated and super crossed for years and even though it may have looked like a small tumble it deff did its damages.it does also look to me like he had no helmet on which is a pure dumb dumb move but i cant be certain by the angle and distance of the shot.best of wishes to yah TJ.....

that sucks. He seemed like a good guy on mtv. If he wasn't wearing a helmet, he asked for it.

This is WHY you wear a HELMET! I feel for him and hope he is ok - but NOT setting a great example for kids! OR he just did.

Don't listen to the trolls. TJ is still in ICU, but the doctors are very optimistic. He had a CT scan this morning; no better or worse. MRI later this AM.

It's not a rule that you have to wear a full-face helmet. I think Chad Kagey does, right? Because he doesn't want to get hurt, or he once did get badly hurt... It's at the BMXer's own choosing to wear one of those helmets. I mean, to wear a full-face helmet sort of takes the whole "bycycle" effect out of it and makes it more "Motocross", but if all of the good BMXers are going to get seriously hurt and slip into comas every other day, then I'm all for the full-face helmet. I can go either way with it. I love the way it looks, but I also like the old-school head helmets.

I hope he gets a full recovery.

TMZ Admin...can you confirm whether or not TJ is still alive? Based upon a comment from commenter "sloppy seconds" he has passed. Please advise?

@Michelle He was wearing a helmet. Of course he was wearing a helmet. TJ always wears a helmet!! And, this was the Dew Tour so they require helmets. Please stop being an uninformed, opinionated idiot.
