Glee Photo Shoot Draws Fire

'Borders on Pedophilia'

10/20/2010 12:05 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The producers of "Glee" are taking some serious heat over a sexually charged photo shoot involving three cast members -- with one powerful parents group saying the pictorial "borders on pedophilia."

The Parents Television Council has released a statement thrashing producers for allowing Dianna Agron, Cory Monteith and Lea Michele to participate in a "hyper-sexualized" photo shoot for the November issue of GQ -- despite the fact that both actresses are 24 years old and Corey is 28.

The PTC declares, “It is disturbing that GQ, which is explicitly written for adult men, is sexualizing the actresses who play high school-aged characters on ‘Glee’ in this way. It borders on pedophilia."

The statement continues, "By authorizing this kind of near-pornographic display, the creators of the program have established their intentions on the show’s direction. And it isn’t good for families."

So we gotta ask ...

Pedophilia (or paedophilia) is a psychological disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a sexual preference for prepubescent children.World Health Organization, Section F65.4: Paedophilia (online access via ICD-10 site map table of contents)Freund, K. (1981). ...

The parents television council just proves that they don't know the meaning of the word pedophilia. The photoshoot might be bordering on softcore pornography, but it's nowhere near bordering on pedophilia.

Objectification of women. I thought Glee was more than that. Pretty disappointed

Many of you are missing the point. Yes, they're adults, but they're *portrayed* as underage by having them dressed as high schoolers and having the shoot set in a high school. Yes, they're adults, and they can pose for Playboy, or Hustler, or Interracial Mombangers Magazine for all I care, but what they're doing is sexualizing kids (even if adults are portraying kids). It's not pedophelia, but it's inappropriate.

Pedophilia involves people 13 and under. I HATE when people misuse this word.

Tara, what are you talking about it's not meant to be a "family show"? Not all "family" shows are rated TV-G, these days there are a wide variety of ratings that fit within "family show", this one is rated TV-14 (which means ok for ages 14+), so that would mean it's considered suitable for those 14 and up...like the actors are portraying on the show itself. That would still make this a "family show". Shows don't have to have a G rating to be considered family shows these days.

To me this photo-shoot definitely borders on pedaophelia, not because the people actually in the photo-shoot aren't of age but because they are portraying characters in the photo-shoot who aren't of age and the photo-shoot seriously crosses the line.

Personally I think this show could stay within tasteful boundaries and still be a great show...but they are choosing to really push it where sex is considered with characters who are still minors. It's this type of "pushing" that makes things main-stream in the media these days...that makes it acceptable to show 14-17 year olds being sexual. That type of main-stream acceptability is what sends the signal to kids that it's ok to behave the way they see on the television, even with parents who don't want them to behave that way.

While nothing was "technically" done wrong...I personally think the people who had this photo shot done for their publication knew exactly what they were doing. They were out to get controversy so people would be talking about it.

Cooley, you are correct. Pedophelia is not the correct term that should be used here (hebephelia is the proper term, for adolescents 15-19). However, most people don't know that. It's still tasteless.

We worked our butts off trying to get men to respect us, burning our bras and all, so these women can take off their clothes to be masterbated to? It's BS. Girls, if you want respect, this doesn't help. You can't respect someone who doesn't respect themselves. Any woman who doesn't care that she's only loved for her body, is no woman.

Regardless of the proposed "artistic" subject matter, everyone can easily see, with their own eyes, that these young women are in their mid twenties. Besides, this is "GQ", . . . not something oriented, or intended toward actual teen reading.
