John Travolta -- Globes Were 'More Like a Roast'

1/23/2011 12:34 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

John Travolta -- who was the implied butt of a controversial joke from Ricky Gervais during the Golden Globes -- seemed to acknowledge the situation last night when he told our photog the event was "more like a roast" than an awards show.

John was all smiles leaving an event at the Hollywood Palladium last night as dozens of fans asked for autographs and congratulated him on his new baby. But he was stone cold silent when we asked him if he had any words for Gervais.

Sometimes saying nothing truly says it all.

I don't care what Travolta's sexuality is. He is a decent man who loves his family and actually provides great entertainment in most of his movies. He's been through a horrific tragedy and now has a start at happiness with a brand new life in his home. Good for you, John. BTW, I too thought they were talking about Cruise.

Worse than the controversy is the fact that (apparently) some people didn't even get the joke. He was talking about Tom Cruise, not Travolta. I've NEVER heard anyone suggest that John Travolta was gay, but people have been saying that about Cruise for years!

You miss the joke. He's not saying they are homosexual he is intstead insulting them by refering to a meme. As if being gay is a terribly bad inflection to your stasis as a human being. As if being homosexual would make you less than normal, less than prime and less of a citizen of the world. Ricky wants all the striahgts to giggle at his politically correct stereotype and join him as he bashes sexuality.
Would you understand the hate if he referenced them as being black? What's the difference? You see what you want. There is nothing wrong with being gay.

As a christian you're bashing him because of his religion? Is that what Christ told you to do as he was dying on the cross? You'll sneer and call his religion silly? Your belief that a superior being immaculately pregnated a mortal to teach you his law is better than another relegion? Says who? You mock the men that have died giving you the freedom to practice your hate.

Could not have said it better. After trying to watch the show (which I thought was awful and turned it after about an hour) my first thoughts at most of his comments were... really, this is suppose to be funny, it was all soooo lame and tasteless!

John Travolta is exactly right: The recent Golden Globes were more like a roast, and the celebs were caught unaware and unprepared to be so lavishly peppered and done to a turn. But judging from the voluminous feedback and polls, viewers and fans loved Ricky Gervais' performance and steady stream of zingers — and couldn't get enough of it! And that shouts volumes.

1) all those Hollywood a-holes who get paid far too much pretending to be someone else, and are used to people kissing their asses deserve to be put in their place

2) John is gay

3) he had another baby with a menopausal woman

4) they are members of a cult...PS, by definition, FBI, Interpol, and fricken common sens, Scientology isw a cult

5) just because you're rich and famous doesn't make it any less of a cult, you are THE primae target for these scammers cuz they want all your money to function

6) cults and terrorists work in similar ways- but without financial backing...their mission fails

7) Gervais should have been much more blunt- he was far too reserved

8) screw those actors- they all have mental problems, drug problems, etc

You are so right, TMZ: John Travolta's reaction is worth a thousand words and appears to prove Ricky Gervais' innuendo (no pun intended ;-) spot-on.

I LOVED Rickey Gervais!!!!!!!!! Im an american and i agree that some of us are WAY to uptight about many things. Even the new MTV show Skins is getting slammed, and its not even close to being as crude as the UK Skins, which BTW is MUCH better.

As far as John goes, there is evidence he is gay, just google Carrie Fisher she outed him twice in two different magazines. NOT that it matters. What matters is that he cant live an authentic life.

I dont like Tom Cruise either, because of his attitude, and have heard the rumours he is gay, but, i have never heard or seen any real proof that he is. So, who really knows about him??

It was crystal clear Ricky was referring to both John and Tom, in my opinion.

Ricky Gervais was alluding to a Hollywood irony — not slurring gays. Get some perspective. Cruise and Holmes did not attend the Golden Globes: Perhaps they got a heads-up on the joke, in addition to the alleged Anne Hathaway snit.

I thought Ricky did a good job. Definitely was risky, but I believe he has to be.
