Gilbert Gottfried

Fired by Aflac

Over Japan Tweets

3/14/2011 6:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Gilbert Gottfried was fired by Aflac from his gig as the voice of its duck mascot in the wake of his controversial series of tweets about the earthquake in Japan.

Gilbert Gottfried Fired Aflac
The company released a statement saying, "Gilbert’s recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac ... Aflac will immediately set plans in motion to conduct a nationwide casting call to find a new voice of the iconic Aflac Duck."

Attempts to reach Gottfried were not successful.

@charles johnson: "Japan never apologized for the Battan death march and the killing of thousands of American and Phillipine servicemen. So why should we care about them?

You don't have to. But almost all the people alive today in Japan did not perpetrate those war crimes and were not even alive during that war and are not responsible for those horrible acts. So why blame all the Japanese people for those inhuman crimes? When you see innocent people struck down in an instant by an earthquake or a tsunami, do you feel nothing? No sympathy? No human feeling?

Did you know that AFLAC has raised over $60... million in the USA for childhood cancer research and treatment since 1995? Not saying AFLAC is good or bad and I don't work there, but the company and its employees have obviously been doing some good charity work in America. That's more than some companies. Press release is here if you care to read it:

Yeah, for those who are trying to defend gotFIRED saying crap like "ppl need to lighten up" I'd really like to see if you'd be so "openminded" if you just lost your home and your family and some jackass tweeted jokes about your tragedy, try to think with your brains ppl and not with your asses.

Japan has integrity and its people show respect. If this tragedy happened here, there would be looters running wild. Not in Japan. They are mourning. They are scared. They are cold and hungry. They are without. I don't know how anything about their dire situation could be considered funny. Not only are his jokes in poor taste, but they also show the mindset of a sociopath.

There is a time and a place for humor. But there is never humor in people dying.

Come on people... water killed those people in Japan. Does that mean people should never drink water ?

As for Gilbert... the answer to the question he is thinking is... Yes Gilbert, it might be too soon !

You have to look at his firing in the context of the company he was fired from. The company is an INSURANCE company. He promotes a company that is suposed to show compassion and assistance when you are in dire need trough times of physical and emotional distress because of loss. For him to joke about people who are going through just such a devistating experience and it is not even over yet, but just keeps coming is reprehensible. It is not free speech, it is poor business respresentation let alone humanity.
