Gilbert Gottfried

Fired by Aflac

Over Japan Tweets

3/14/2011 6:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Gilbert Gottfried was fired by Aflac from his gig as the voice of its duck mascot in the wake of his controversial series of tweets about the earthquake in Japan.

Gilbert Gottfried Fired Aflac
The company released a statement saying, "Gilbert’s recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac ... Aflac will immediately set plans in motion to conduct a nationwide casting call to find a new voice of the iconic Aflac Duck."

Attempts to reach Gottfried were not successful.

I always love the knee-jerk reaction by ***** executives in American business.

Gilbert's tweets were definitely in poor taste, but didn't rise to firing someone over being distasteful. What did AFLAC expect when they hired Gilbert Gottfried? He is a comic--always going to push boundaries.

I did not approve of his comments, but this wasn't the first time he has done something like this. Nobody can do anything in this world now a days without getting into trouble. I hope that every comedian out there gets in trouble for everything they have said too it's only fair!!! I guess comedians better find something else to do with there lives, no freedom in the USA anymore!!

ac

Aflac is the #1 foreign insurer in Japan and the company made its name selling cancer expense policies in Japan in the 1970s, and still derives about three-quarters of its revenue in the country.

They had to fire his ass.

WTF did Aflac expect when they hired Gottfried? This is his brand of humour, it's what he does. Did they expect that voicing a duck was going to somehow change him? This is nonsense.

Where's KOOKY?

What you need to remember is that Aflac has a large presence in Japan. The duck commercials appear over there as well though in Japan its rude to ignore someone so everyone talks to the duck but still a company with a large Japanese presence has to act immediately. This isn't about "lightening up" it's about business and the bottom line.

ac, you're correct: AFLAC does have a large presence in Japan, BUT...commercials over there do NOT use GG's voice...it's someone else's (thank God!). I found this out by reading the company's official press release.

He is great as a duck, but that is it. He has THE most annoying voice ever. And he is NOT funny.

"He is a comedian, what do you expect"??

What DO I EXPECT??

Common sense, moral, taste, respect for human tragedies.

He is not a comedian, he is a jerk. That's the difference.

I like Gilbert and can see the humor in the jokes, but this was a bit too soon.

Gilbert could care less about what anyone has to say about his jokes, but take away a paycheck and that is how you really hurt him. I noticed he removed the jokes from his twitter.

He deserves it. He's cheap and rude although he does make a good duck.

@ Katie10 - you are exactly correct. Business 101.

If any artist/athlete etc. signs up to be a brand representative, they need to be cognizant of what they say and do (it's in their contract for goodness' sake) because they represent the brand! It's simple! If you don't want to have ANY filter whatsoever, DON'T TAKE THE MONEY! (Not yelling at you, just frustrated that people only seem to see half the argument) Then you can say whatever you want! Hopefully people will then still pay to see your stand up comedy...makes you wonder why he had to take money from anywhere besides doing comedy, hmmm?

TO JIM...YOU ARE SO RIGHT.I AM VERY SURPRISED HARVEY WOULD ALLOW THOSE NON-JOKES TO GET POSTED.SHAME ON YOU MR. LEVIN.......

Tracker,

Mr. Levin cares about revenue. As I have consistently stated here on this web site. Now, it seems that if you can believe it, an INSURANCE company has acted properly, and with blinding speed.

I applaud Aflac Insurance Company, as they saw this for what it was. Raciest, appalling and humorless. These people (victims) in Japan are acting with something (most) Americans lost years ago.

Honor.

Harvey Levin,

Pleas pull down the post of Mr. Gottfrie's.

This guys is odd like these people http://www.typical-human.com, but that is what makes him a unique comedian, in my view, is too a little too early to be trying to pull these shi*t and more than anything is seeking attention.
