Children's Services Visits Mariah Carey

5/26/2011 2:36 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Social workers from the LA County Department of Children and Family Services will arrive at Mariah Carey's house any moment to conduct a formal interview with the singer -- after receiving an anonymous complaint that she drank a beer while breast feeding ... TMZ has learned.

0526_mariah_carey_TMZ_ex

DCFS launched the investigation after someone complained Mariah drank a Guinness in the hospital after giving birth to her twins about a month ago. We're told DCFS social workers will ask Mariah about the widely reported incident and interview others in the house as well.

The investigation is curious because hospital workers were closely monitoring Mariah and fully saw what was going on in her room. Sources tell us someone from the hospital told Mariah it would be beneficial to drink a dark beer -- like a Guinness -- to assist her in lactating.

We're told Mariah took the advice and drank a Guinness and in no way hid what she was doing from hospital staff -- assuming it was fine to do.

Several people connected with DCFS are privately critical of the agency for honing in on anonymous tips against celebrities ... and devoting "extensive resources" when the agency should be looking at serious cases of abuse.

the jerk nurse that gave the original tip got what she deserved in that she got fired. trying to ruin the life of a new mother who is trying to do the right thing by nursing her babies is wrong. if somebody had done this to Natasha Richardson 16 years ago no respectable entertainment show would've covered it as most of them are friends with her mom oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave and Vanessa would've sued

Wow, child services really over-reacted. It's not against the law to have a beer while pregnant or while breast feeding, so what is the basis of their investigation? Big brother all the way.

@RabbleRouser - hospitals do not test newborns for drugs or alcohol.

One bottle of Guinness is (iirc) ~4% ABV. Which works out around the same alcohol as in a glass of wine. For that reason I doubt Guinness would be the first choice of drink for anyone drinking to get drunk. It doesn't make sense as a risk. For a presumably overworked, underpaid, undervalued government department (I don't envy their job) the DCFS devoting resources to something this spurious seems very dumb.

Gee, isn't it HER body?

Not when she's breastfeeding. What she eats/drinks/snorts gets passed to the baby.

It's not illegal for a woman to drink a beer. Look it up.

DCFS should go to Walmart and look for abuse.

The BabyCenter Editorial Team / Babycenter.com

"Nursing moms are often advised by family and friends to relax and have a beer to help stimulate milk production.
And it's true that a polysaccharide in the barley used to make beer seems to stimulate prolactin, which helps moms make more milk.
(The good news, if you like the taste of beer, is that nonalcoholic beer has the same stimulating effect.)

Alcohol, on the other hand, can inhibit milk production.
This may explain why babies have been found to drink significantly less milk in the four hours after their mom drinks a beer.

And then there's the issue of exposing your baby to even a small amount of alcohol.
Alcohol is present in breast milk at the same level as in the blood.
And that level can continue to rise for 90 minutes after you have a drink.
Even if you haven't had much to drink, your baby is so much smaller than you are that a little bit of alcohol for you is a lot for your baby.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that nursing moms avoid alcohol with the possible exception of the occasional small drink.
The AAP also suggests waiting two hours to breastfeed after having a drink.
(The alcohol will clear from your breast milk just as it clears from your bloodstream.)

If you're concerned about milk production, focus on eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet and breastfeeding regularly. If you're still having trouble, read our article on low milk production and consult your healthcare provider or a lactation expert before you pick up a six-pack"

...I have witnessed Mimi on several occasions drink many of men, self included, under a table or two.

Is Mimi an alcoholic??? Ehh....However, calling out the tot-police because she may or may have not consumed a bottle of beer, while breast feeding is a smidgen over the top.

There are children in this country, that have been literally locked away in basements and cellars, that have not seen the light of day in years.

CPS. should best their services tending to the whereabouts of these children, than worrying about if some celebrity indulged in a bottle of deliciously scrumptious, ice cold, liquid barley......Artofwar

My wife was prescribed 1 beer a night to begin breastfeeding after our baby was born. This was by our pediatrician. Child services may want to graduate to the 21st century.
