Gay Cop

Fights for Right

to March in Uniform

6/7/2011 10:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A gay correctional officer is outraged that his department thinks marching in uniform in the West Hollywood gay pride parade is a "discredit" to the department ... and he's taking legal action to fight for his rights.

Andrew Johnson works as a correctional officer for the California Institution for Women in Chino, CA.  He's also a member of the Gay Peace Officers Association.  Johnson asked his superiors at the Department of Corrections for permission to march in uniform on Sunday, but was told he couldn't do it because of a law that prohibits officers from marching in uniform if it would bring "discredit" to the department.

Johnson's lawyer, Gloria Allred, said at a news conference that other departments -- including the LAPD, L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the CHP -- allow officers to march in uniform in the parade.

Allred says the Department of Corrections allows officers to march in uniform in other parades, including the Christmas parade and the Carrot Festival.

Allred says she's filed a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, alleging discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Allred wouldn't let Johnson speak, because of fear of retaliation.

She wants the warden to reverse his position so Johnson can march.

Unfortunately, @BW is correct - GAY COPS are actually the worst. They have had to hide their lifestyle so deeply that they become very bitter, especially towards openly gay individuals.

And I speak from experience.

Now, having Gloria Alred representing a GAY COP, well .... I culdn't think of a better match. PEN1S ENVY and a VAG WANNA BE.

so funny. the reporters are asking the right questions. I wonder if she is actually thinking while she is speaking--"Why am I doing this? This does actually sound ridiculous"

Other cops are allowed to march in uniform. This guy got a letter inviting him to join them. Why discriminate against him?

In wanting to wear his UNFIORM, he's trying to use his job to make a political statement. The department's decision is right. He will not be on duty when he's marching and on duty is when he should wear his uniform.

I am watching this on mute and it's quite entertaining, I have to say. Watching Allred move her head in a very important way, and then giving that stupid little smile, as if to say, "all of you people are beneath me!" And the pauses. Have to have the pauses to make it seem more important.

Would it be a political statement to march in a civil rights parade?

Gloria Allred is a fame-whoring porcupine!

I wouldn't want that p*ssified fairy sitting next to her attempting to protect me while in the line of duty. I mean, seriously, look at IT sitting there all purse-lipped and demure. God, help us!

1. he is not a cop, he is a correctional officer.
2. why would he want to wear his uniform? Just to get told no and he could sue someone? Stupid, ridiculous.
3. Most companies and law enforcement agencies say you cannot wear your uniform outside of work to not mislead the public on who or what you are and whether you are on duty.
They do this for the public's safety. SERIOUSLY DUDE, and Gloria come on you just keep stooping lower and lower and having known you for years you have gotten as bad as a ambulance chaser, and you used to be highly respected. Get back to that Gloria.
DOH, this guy set this whole thing up for a bit of cash in his pocket and I hope the state or whoever he is sue'ing does NOT GIVE IN or give him a penny.

Why is TMZ calling this man a cop? He's a overpaid correctional officer not a cop.
