Roger Ebert: 'I Was Probably Too Quick to Tweet'

6/21/2011 8:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Roger Ebert says he "was probably too quick to tweet" about the car crash that killed "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn yesterday ... explaining that his post was "not intended as cruel."

Ebert just blogged about the situation on his website -- saying, "To begin with, I offer my sympathy to Ryan Dunn's family and friends, and to those of Zachary Hartwell, who also died in the crash. I mean that sincerely. It is tragic to lose a loved one."

Ebert continues, "I also regret that my tweet about the event was considered cruel. It was not intended as cruel. It was intended as true."

Ebert explains that he wrote the tweet based on preliminary reports and admits, "I have no way of knowing if Ryan Dunn was drunk at the time of his death."

"I don't know what happened in this case, and I was probably too quick to tweet. That was unseemly."

Ebert, however, staunchly defends the message in his tweet -- that people should NOT drink and drive -- saying, "I do know that nobody has any business driving on a public highway at 110 mph, as some estimated -- or fast enough, anyway, to leave a highway and fly through 40 yards of trees before crashing."

"That is especially true if the driver has had three shots and three beers. Two people were killed. What if the car had crashed into another car?"

As we previously reported, Dunn's friend Bam Margera WENT OFF on Ebert last night -- telling the movie critic to shut his "f**king mouth" about Dunn's crash.

Isn't anyone going to hold the bar in Philly accountable? I thought there was a law where the owners were now held liable when a person leaves drunk, and kills themselves. I am glad he didn't kill any other people.

Two lives have been lost for no reason, and families are devastated. Instead of people fighting about it, maybe this tragedy can help save lives. That could help the families heal, knowing the loss of their loved one helped others.

Bam Margera is yet another moron who has gained fame acting like a moron. He's a quasi-celeb ala MTV, and nothing more. Who is he to tell Ebert to shut his (expletive) mouth? Its called freedom of speech Bam. That's why you're allowed to film all the moronic acts you have and to put them on display for all to see. When you, and/or your moron friends run out of luck - you get what you deserve. Payback is a mother(expletive) - you'd better slow your roll on all fronts if you intend to reach your natural expiration date.

I support Ebert! Regardless of alcohol others were endangered and it's fortunate that more lives weren't lost. It's also a shame that two lives were cut short and I'm sympathetic to the emotions of his friends and family who are suffering.

What he said was the truth. This is different that the "JACKASS" stunts, Dunn's actions were pure stupidity and I don't think Roger Ebert should have had to apologize for speaking his opinion. Yes it was harsh, but people c'mon, this JACKASS killed himself AND ANOTHER HUMAN BEING with his voluntary act of drunk driving.......no sugar coating for this one....

Dunn's [UNINTENTIONAL] revenge from the grave!!!!

How could Ebert have known his 'off-the-cuff' Tweet would result in his mangled, disfigured picture being posted all over the internet?

News sites could've used an older, more recognisable stock photo of you, but instead have gone with the current Circus Side Show pic (because it obviously gets more 'hits').

Whoops!

Think before you tweet Ebert!

Regardless of all of the negative feedback Ebert is getting from his 'truthful' tweet, he will still be more relevant than a person who's claim to fame is being an idiot and shoving a toy car up his ass.

Ebert has NO reason to apologize.
There is NO WAY Dunn wasn't over 1.0.
Ask Hartwell's family if they disagree.

Don't apologize, Ebert.

He was driving drunk and he killed his friend while driving drunk. There is no excuse for that.

NOBODY is condoning drinking and driving. While the cir****tances leading this to may be alleged and unfortunate, two families lost theirs sons and people lost their friends.

How about some compassion for them you stupid hate filled mongers?? What a bunch of hypocritical asses you all are. I do not believe the ones spewing hate on here have never made a bad decision in their lives...the only difference is you are still able to sit behind your computers, with your anonymous sign ons judging someone whose bad decision may have cost him and someone else. Doesn't mean they deserved it and WTH are you to determine that??

THe fact remains...there are people who care deeply about these two humans and for THEIR sakes, STFU and allow them to grieve in peace or the way they need to.

My compassion and sympathy goes out to both of their families.

Not quick enough. Ryan Dunn deserved his fate. When you drink that much, then speed in the fastest Porsche ever built, it's going to end in a bad way.

I love all those "at your age you should have known better". WTF? Young people always expect that everyone older than them has to restrain themselves while they give themselves every pass they can imagine.

Sorry your drunken fool hero bit the big one. He made a living as a jackass and we're supposed to feel all sorry for him for dying like a jackass?

These dudes got their attention by being a bunch of irreverent jackasses and now they want to get huffy now when faced with irreverent comments from others.

They boys were a bad example from the start. There is no telling how many young people have been injured trying to imitate these idiots. Maybe now being a jackass will be less en vogue. Sorry you ****** up, Dunn. Too bad you had to take a passenger with you. ****.

And **** off, Bam. You should be the main one telling people he was an idiot for doing this. He did wrong. You seem to want everyone to ignore it? If you're not going to tell it like it is, you should "Shut the **** up!"
