Zac Efron -- Could He Have Prevented Buddy's DUI?

7/9/2011 6:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Zac Efron was drinking with good friend Ryan Rottman literally minutes before Rottman was arrested for DUI.  The question, should Zac have said anything to his pal to prevent him from taking the wheel?

Sources inside the Dillon's Irish Pub in Hollywood tell TMZ ... Zac, Ryan, Rumer Willis and a few other friends ordered a total of  7 Kamikaze shots, 8 or 9 mixed drinks and 3 - 4 beers.

Zac and Rottman both left the bar at around 9:30 and went their separate ways.  We shot video of Zac running from the bar to his car, though it appears Rumer drove him away. By 9:45, Rottman was in police custody.

Rottman apparently was hammered.  Cops spotted him after he drove up a curb near Dillion's.  He blew a .19, more than twice the legal limit.

We asked Zac's rep if the actor urged his friend to take a taxi or find some other way home that would not have put him behind the wheel.  We did not get a response.

So we ask ...

When someone leaves a bar, there is a responsibility to say to their friends, "Are you OK to drive? Are you sure?" Beyond that, what can you do? These people are adults, you can't hold them down and force them in your car.

And for Pete's sake, these people are making quite a bit of scratch, they can't afford a cab to and from the bar? Come on!

Why should th duty of stopping the friend fall on Zac, who was most probably drunk too?!!? Is he a child who canno thgink for himself? If you feel disoriented after drinking GET A CAB!!!!!!!

Celeb's often feel the laws only apply to the little people.
The one actor I really respect is Mark Salling who plays Puck on Glee- Saw right here on TMZ- Mark and friends got hammered, left the club, and went right into a taxi. Gee celeb folks is it THAT hard?

Ryan isn't Zac's responsibilty. It was a GROUP of friends out drinking. A group of legal friends drinking not two friends out drinking and one leaving the other to drive himself home drunk. Zac was responsible and did not drive himself home. Ryan could have done the same thing but didn't. There were plenty of people with them who could have told Ryan he shouldn't drive, wether they did or didn't only they know. But I can say that the girl riding in the back seat of Ryan's car ended up driving the car after Ryan was arrested.
So the real question should be, why didn't that girl drive to begin with??? Not, why didn't the celebrity stop the other celebrity from driving drunk.

I think Ryan is ultimately responsible for drinking and driving and should accept whatever consequences there are for that. But him being responsible for his behavior doesn't mean his friends didn't also have a separate responsibility that night IMO. They're not mutually dependent.

His friends that he was with, not just Zac, but Rumer and the 3 other people Ryan had in his car when he was pulled over, also had a responsibility as his friends and just decent human beings to do what they could to stop him from getting behind the wheel, especially since it appears there were at least 2 others in the group sober and able to drive.

His blood alcohol content was almost exactly the same as Ryan Dunn's was the night he died, like within thousandths of a point. He, the other people in the car with him and everyone else on the road that night are lucky that the cops were there to pull him over before he could do any damage other than to the underside of his car by driving up over the curb. He could've easily killed himself, his friends in the car with him and any innocent people who happened to have the misfortune of being on the road at the same time as him.

How old is Rumer (god I hate that name) Willis? Surely not old enough to be drinking in a bar. Or out with 24 year old boys!

To Ryan: I hope you've had an eyeopening few days. Stupid is as stupid does!
To Zac: This blown up in your face for sure, but as it says; You're only as good as the company you keep.

Am I the only one who's surprised that Ryan could even stand after blowing a .19? In some of the videos I've seen he didn't even appear drunk. Either way, it was Ryan who made the decision to get behind the wheel when drunk. No one knows whether he was encouraged not to drive so I don't see how Zac can be blamed. He was in Rumer's car anyway.

Still, I hope this serves as a wakeup call for Ryan. And for Zac that he needs new friends. His "ninja" posse is bad news

Our drinking buddies are NOT our true friends and DON'T have our best interest at heart. Period.

If you walk into a bar knowing you are going to drink, but have no plans on how to get home without your getting behind the wheel.. then you deserve to go to jail before killing yourself, and others. Accountability, for everyone whose parents never taught them what it means, to take responsibility for one's own actions.

Zac is not responsible for the stupidity of his friend. Its unfair to place any of the blame on him, as far as it being his responsibility its not. Its so wrong to completely concentrate on him when clearly there were at least 4 other people that could of done something about it as well. The vote is not accurate at all because if you read the comments 95% of people know it has nothing to do with Zac but the way the question is frased makes it seem like hes to blame.

The thing is, Zac is hanging with people who are of the lowest common denominator. None of them has any career to speak of. Rumer has been bar hopping since she was 19 or before with a fake ID. She got kicked out of a bar when she was 19 because they knew who she was and how old she was. Now she's almost 23. Ryan has done bit parts in some forgettable movies including "House Bunny" and did a forgettable Nickelodeon kids show. And that Crawford Wilson (guy in front seat of Ryan's car) has been featured in video games and a few forgettable TV shows.

The thing is, none of these people has any money to speak of except Rumer who is from a wealthy family that bought her a house and probably gives her an allowance. She couldn't be making much on that endorsement she's doing for some clothing line.

What it comes down to is that Zac is the only one in the bunch that has a career going and is making money. So why would he hang out with this group? My gut feeling is that their low status makes him feel important. When he's with them, he's the big man, the movie star. He's using them just as they are using him. But, it does make him look bad.

You are who your friends are.

That is the stupidest thing I ever heard. He doesnt need to hang out with people to make himself feel important, has anyone thought of the possibility that maybe he likes his friends. Just because one of them made an idiotic decision, does not mean they are all horrible people using each other for fame and glory. Come on think of the normal 20 something crowds in the world they all do stupid crap as they mature and try to find out how they want to be. Get over it people! I'm not saying drunk driving is ok in anyway but blaming Zac for his friends actions is ludicrous.
