'Sister Wives' Family -- Just Like The Gays!

7/12/2011 7:20 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The Mormons and the gays -- they don't always get along ... but thanks to a brand new lawsuit about to be filed by "Sister Wives" star Kody Brown, it seems they have more in common than you'd think!

Brown and his multi-wife "plural" family claim they're filing a lawsuit against the state of Utah tomorrow -- challenging the bigamy law that makes their lifestyle illegal.

The Brown family attorney posted a statement on his blog saying, "We are not demanding the recognition of polygamous marriage. We are only challenging the right of the state to prosecute people for their private relations and demanding equal treatment with other citizens in living their lives according to their own beliefs."

The attorney adds, "It is a challenge designed to benefit not just polygamists but all citizens who wish to live their lives according to their own values -- even if those values run counter to those of the majority in the state."

The legal argument is virtually identical to the one made by supporters of gay marriage ... which is illegal in most U.S. states ... including Utah.

So, we gotta ask ...

Please get it right. It is not the Mormons/ Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who practice polygamy. Mormons and those members of the LDS church do not condone polygamy. These people are members of a broken off sect. They should not be called "mormons" so lightly. It is misrepresenting those who truly are Mormon/LDS and do not agree with this.

I don't have a problem with polygamy; I only have a problem with the domestic abuse it often leads to... But I think they have a great argument. Who are they hurting by marrying multiple people? Who are gay people hurting by marrying each other?

Any arrangement that consenting adults want to arrange for themselves is THEIR business. And it should be recognized by the goverment. But honestly polygamy can be satisfied by writing up the proper wills and contracts its just that it shouldnt be illegal if its between consenting adults

Problem with the argument of "challenge designed to benefit not just polygamists but all citizens who wish to live their lives according to their own values -- even if those values run counter to those of the majority in the state."
It would open the door to pedophiles. There has to be a line and if you win this in a court then pedophiles will have an opening and no one wants that!! I don't care if you want to live with a harem it is none of my concern but before challenging state laws please consider what it could possibly make legal!!!!

Actually they're NOT like gays. "The gays" are seeking legal recognition of their monogamous relationship. "The Sister Wives" crew just want the de-criminalization of their polygamous relationship(s). They're closer to potheads. 420!!!Government doesn't have to condone, but do leave alone

What business is it of anyone's what they do? They are not hurting anyone except busy bodies and only because the busy bodies make it their business when it is not. Morality can't be a law makers job to decide. We have to decide our own morality. That is what makes this a free country. The most important reason the US was established was for freedom of religion.
I am a happily married woman to a man and his only wife and that is what I personally believe in. But that is for me. Maybe not for others. That is their business. NOT MINE!

though polygamy is stupid, people should have the right to choose how they want to live their life. individual rights for all!

That's a good point. If gay marriage is legal (at least in a few states), then why not polygamy too? And, if the wives are all married to 1 man, aren't the wives also already kind of...married to each other already? And what's so special about the number 2 for participants a marriage? What about a marriage commune with several men and several woman? Can anyone say...slippery slope?

MORMONS:

If it was ever right in God's eyes for people to have more than one wife, WHY is it "not recognized" now???? Please, I'm seriously curious. Has God changed his mind?

I am for legalizing polygamy. Sheep can't give consent under our current legal system, but men and women can.
With the said, the big difference I see between gay marriage and polygamous marriage is that we have lots of lesbians!--not so many women are clamoring for the right to have multiple husbands. That make just mean marriage is more advantageous for men than women in our current system, but it could also be a huge red flag.

I do agree that Gay marriage should be legalized. However, I do not believe Polygamy should be legalized because unfortunately it happens too often in polygamist marriages where young children are being married off to a way older adult.

I just don't see the big deal here. He is only "legally" married to one woman, Mary. The other 3 are married only in a spiritual sense according to their own personal religious beliefs. We aren't talking about underage girls, child abuse or weapons hoarding like the LLDS Utah group that was split due to those exact ILLEGAL activities. These are grown ups. Yes they live an unconventional lifestyle, so do many other people. If it works for them, isn't hurting their kids and they aren't out there pushing it on others...who cares. Let these people live the life they choose. Utah is wrong to go after these people.
