Barron Hilton Ordered to Pay $4.9 MIL In DUI Crash

7/15/2011 12:13 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Paris Hilton's younger brother Barron has been ordered to shell out $4.9 million to a gas station attendant he struck  back in 2008 ... the same day he was arrested for DUI.

Barron Hilton 4.9 million

Hilton was sued by Fernando Tellez -- who was working at a gas station on Pacific Coast Highway when Barron -- who was 18-years-old at the time -- rolled up in a Mercedes Benz ... and struck the guy with his ride.

Tellez's attorney claims he suffered "permanent disability" and has been forced to "undergo multiple surgeries and medical procedures" ever since.

Hilton was arrested on suspicion of DUI that day after blowing a .14. He later pleaded no contest to the charge.

Now, an L.A. County Superior Court jury has ordered Hilton to fork over $4.9 million in damages.

A source connected with Barron tells TMZ, "We disagree with the jury.  Barron did not strike the attendant.  Barron knows he did wrong. It happened 3 years ago and he's been incredibly responsible ever since."

Now you know why mommy & daddy Hilton took out that $10 million line of credit on their home a short while back. They knew then that it would be needed to cover an "upcoming expense".

I don't think it is excessive at all. The poor attendant not only has past due medical bills but future medical costs not to mention lost wages and prescriptions and physical therapy pre and post surgical care... the list goes on and on. It is a good thing he sued. there is no telling how the body will react to surgical procedures later in ones life. This covers the unknown. Good for him.

Trust Fund Baby. I'm a Hilton, make it go away.

Mr. Tellez will never see a penny. Appeal, more Appeal and so on.

"Now, an L.A. County Superior Court jury has ordered Hilton to fork over $4.9 in damages." $4.90 doesn't seem like much. That'll get you a latte at Starbucks depending on where you live.

@cochino, .14 is nothing, maybe 2 beers. The law used to be .20

Is the gas station attendant an illegal alien?

He also kept working at the station for several months afterwards, so how many injuries could he possibly have sustained?

Of course this verdict will be appealed - and for good reason.

I'm not condoning his actions. He did the wrong thing and he should have to pay.

I just don't think it should be that much. How disabled is the attendant, really? Is the doctor he went to reputable, or does he have a history of ambulance chasing? Was there a 2nd opinion sought on whether he really needed these surgeries?

@Jason I just hope you feel the same way when you have to fork over millions to some guy b/c you stepped on his foot and now he has "major medical expenses."

GOOD... I just wish HE had to WORK for the money his parents are going to hand over. But he's never had to work for anything he's ever gotten,or pay for anything he's ever done!!!

Seems to me, as Mr. Lincoln put it, that Americans see lawsuits as winning the lottery.

It's these kinds of cases that clog up the legal system and it takes forever for real cases to resolve.

If the attendant did sustain injuries, Barron should only be required to pay for any medical bills the attendant incurred and any wages he might have lost if he missed work, plus any fines from the govt. Payment for pain and suffering is a joke in this case.

Shouldn't Barron be doing the sentencing after all he is AMERICAN royalty. What would be better "let him eat cake or off with his head."

It would have been cheaper to run him over until he stopped breathing! That's a little on the high side. Too bad the guy won't ever see that amount.

He looks like a younger version of Joel McHale. Being a Hilton I doubt he has his sense of humor though.
