's new movie about a pizza delivery boy who's abducted, outfitted with a bomb, and forced to rob a bank ... is PISSING OFF friends of a man who was killed under VERY similar circumstances ... TMZ has learned.

The movie -- "30 Minutes or Less" -- is being promoted as a comedy flick. But back in 2003, nobody was laughing when 46-year-old pizza man Brian Wells DIED when a bomb strapped around his neck exploded after he tried to rob a bank.

0805_brian_wells_sub_2
Wells insisted he was abducted during a pizza delivery in Pennsylvania -- claiming the bombmaker locked an explosive device around his neck and ordered him to rob a bank.

Cops placed Wells in handcuffs ... but backed away from the guy when they realized the bomb was REAL. The bomb exploded while news cameras rolled ... and Wells was killed instantly.

Years later, federal prosecutors alleged Brian concocted the plan with several other people. One of the plotters insisted Brian was under the impression an actual bomb would NOT be used.

TMZ spoke with one of Brian's closest friends who tells us he's outraged that Hollywood would mock Wells' death ... calling the movie "trash."

The friend tells us, "It's stupid the movie is even coming out ... producers can go jump in a lake for all I care!"

He adds, "Doesn't Brian have a right to die? They're blowing something up that should never have even happened in the first place and now they wanna make a joke out of it ... it's really tragic."

A rep for Columbia Pictures tells TMZ, "Neither the filmmakers nor the stars of '30 Minutes or Less' were aware of this crime prior to their involvement in the film."

The rep adds, "The writers were vaguely familiar with what had occurred and wrote an original screenplay that does not mirror the real-life tragedy. "

I can see the family being upset but in the end every story either comes from truth or imagination... Columbia pictires should atleast acknowledge that this story made headlines nationwide and stop acting as if they have never heard the story!!! Also to all you that believe that he was involved, wake up and stop believing he said she said and let the Feds prove it before this mans name is slammed as being part of this! This man died horrifically and a true tragedy for his family, unfortunately he can not defend himself of these accusations that an actual proven criminal has stated!!!

ok, i'm from pa and was in my 20s when this happened. i can honestly say i do not remember any coverage on this story. this is the first time i'm hearing about this brian wells guy, so it is possible the movie makers didn't know about this story either. now as for the movie itself, it looks stupid. i have no urge to see it because i don't need to rot any more brain cells.

I did a little research about this "poor innocent guy" (I even found the video of him being blowed up, it was cool!) and I came to one conclusion.... him and his "friends" were pieces of ****, and this couldn't have happened to a better person. He knew what he was getting himself into, he just didn't count on this friends putting a REAL bomb around his neck, and I'm sure he didn't expect it to go off. So yea, his friends can go **** themselves!! This movie was made to be entertaining. If the creators of the movie really wanted to steal this man's story, they would have hired a bunch of white trash, middle-aged criminals to play the parts.

People are too damn sensitive. Quit your crying. There are a lot of things in movies and on TV that bear similarities to real events. For example, I'm pretty sure the producers of 24 made plotlines based on some real-life threats made by terrorists and real terrorist attacks, and I know for a fact that the producers of Law & Order made many episodes based on real headlines. I don't ever recall anyone saying that those were in poor taste. Seriously, everyone needs to calm down. For those people who are complaining about this movie, I have one thing to say: If you are offended by it, DON'*****CH IT!

The guy in the real life case was a conspirator. The police acted as safely as they could. It could have caused harm to anyone "helping" him and the bomb squad didn't arrive in time. The movie is in wacky taste because it's obviously based on a grim incident, but come on people. It looks like this will be a funny movie.

to those mentioning how law&oder/criminal minds/csi/whatever already did similar stories with no outrage, those were NOT comedies. i believe americans are some of the most half witted p.o.s's out there. those stories were serious this movie is mocking the situation. i understand both sides, but really, imagine if some other country made a comedy out of 9/11. how'd you feel then???

I couldn't believe it when they started running ads for this. They had to know about the incident. Someone apparently thinks it is funny that a man was actually killed this way. I don't see the humor in it. Some of these people in Hollywood are just demented.

"Go jump in a lake"? Funny being that Erie is on a lake. Really sad this keeps coming up and you can't tell me that they weren't aware of this story. It was a big story for several years.

I actually live where this took place and was driving past where the whole thing went down in the parking lot. It was a sad situation and such a bizarre thing to happen but 80% of the movies we watch are based on some true life event. This movie is no different. I don't think the movie is personally trying to make fun of this guy. It's just another typical comedy with the same old story really.

its a movie. Half the movies out there mimic real life and someone could claim the same bs. And if its really true that him and friends concocted the plan and it backfired, then he got what he deserved.

If this was the case, what about Law & Order? ALL their showa were "ripped from the headlines". I never heard anyone bitching then.

Okay so the guy concocted this plot with others? Then he was not a victim - just another POS trying to rob a bank. He's just dumber than most and blew HIMSELF up in the process. Don't feel sorry for him or his friends at all.

The movie looks hilarious.
