Jesse Farrelly -- son of "Something About Mary" director Bobby Farrelly -- died this week of an apparent drug overdose in Orange County, CA ... TMZ has learned.

According to law enforcement ... emergency personnel responded to an apartment in Costa Mesa, CA late Wednesday night after getting a call about an "unresponsive young male ... possible overdose."

We're told 20-year-old Jesse was transported to a nearby hospital ... where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The coroner has completed the autopsy and has ruled out foul play.

Jesse's father and uncle make up the Farrelly Brothers comedy team ... and he had appeared in a couple of their movies ... including "Something About Mary" and "Hall Pass."

The Farrelly family has released a statement saying, "It is with profound sorrow that we accept the passing of our beloved Jesse following his struggle with addiction. We fully trust that he is now in the hands of our Lord."

The statement continues, "We are immeasurably grateful for the abundance of happiness and laughter he brought into our lives, and we will rejoice eternally for all the moments we got to breathe in his wondrous spirit. The family thanks you for your well wishes and kindly asks that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."

My prayers are with the Farrelly family. As a mother of a 20yr old addict I can tell you they have been grieving for their son when they first found out about his addiction. I'm sure they worried every day that he might die, they hoped that this rehab would work better than the last one. I don't know what his drug of choice was, but most overdoses nowadays are caused by prescription drugs. Kids start snorting oxycodone then go to he much cheaper heroin. This family needs support in their time of need not some of the nasty comments posted by ignorant aholes. From some of the comments looks like Jesse lived in Boston. Massachusetts has been in an opiate epidemic for years since Oxycontin hit the streets in 1996. So many lives have been lost, good people who made a bad choice, it's so sad.

Death in any form is really saddening. Celebrities and substance abuse is a very serious issue that I myself believe is overlooked quite often and doesn't receive enough awareness. What we need to do is encourage rehabilitation and offer a warm embrace of compassion once the celebrity is rehabilitated without the need to harm themselves with substance abuse. Read here about Gerard Butler and his noble choice to enter rehab to treat his substance abuse before it was too late, http://thecelebritycafe.com/feature/2012/02/gerard-butler-leaves-rehab-good-health
