Whitney Houston Invite

It's NOT a Funeral

It's a 'Home Going' Service

2/17/2012 8:40 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Official Whitney Houston invitation... not a funeral... but rather a home going service.
Here's the official Whitney Houston invitation ... and  Whitney's family is not referring to the singer's burial ceremony as a "funeral" ... but rather a "home going service."

The invite -- obtained by TMZ -- reads, "With heartfelt gratitude, the Houston Family requests the honor of your presence at the home going service for Whitney Elizabeth Houston."

A "home going" service is more common in the black community and is usually more upbeat and positive than a typical funeral. The focus is to honor the deceased as they go "home" to Heaven to be with God.

As we previously reported, the ceremony at The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, NJ will be a very exclusive affair ... with a guest list hand-selected by Whitney's family.

The event will begin at 12:00 PM EST -- with several of Houston's famous friends expected to participate in the service ... including Kevin Costner, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin.

God has you now and you are okay. May the Lord touch her mother and daughter and comfort her love ones as well. Peace be unto you.

Like many great artists that have left us, whitney will always be loved and remebered. To the houston/brown family: Hang in there, we all love her but God love her more. Whitney is at peace now and nothing or no one will not ever hurt her again. Love always, the holmes family.

Let me spit some knowledge to those who have made ignorant comments on here about the term ("home-going"). It is a POETIC way of describing death or "homecoming." It is not "ebonics"; it's poetic license. Robert Frost has a poem titled "After Apple-Picking." And in case you didn't know, Robert Frost was white--one of the greatest American poets who ever lived. Same concept with "home-going": noun+participle and hyphenated when the participle comes after the noun, rather than before. It takes a sensitive soul to understand and appreciate poetry and poetic expression. Obviously some of you on here have no such capacity.

Whitney's death is tragic.

Her "family" however, her "home going" family, is beyond tragic. It's utterly pathetic.

Flag at half-staff? For Whitney?!?! Gimme a break! Next we'll see her nominated for Canonization! For crying out loud, she was a drug addict, not a saint or somebody worthy of flying the flag at half staff for. May she rest in peace, but this is enough already.

TMZ please note, "homegoing" service as opposed to funeral is and has been an expression used in the black community for a very long time. We also use sunrise to depict birthday and sunset to depict when someone died on our programs. Maybe if you had someone on your staff that understood the black community the fact that this is a "homegoing" service would not be news.

True, she did have a beautiful voice; however, her involvement with drugs supercedes her career. She will always be remember in both lights -- singing and drug use. Definitely not a role model.

Do you go to the father, Our Lord, after committing sucide? Isn't that in essence what she did with the mix of drugs and alcohol.
