Jeremy Lin

ESPN Apologizes Over Offensive Headline

2/18/2012 6:40 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

ESPN Headline Chink In the Armor
ESPN issued an apology last night after a racially insensitive headline about New York Knicks star guard Jeremy Lin appeared on their mobile site.

The headline, "Chink In the Armor," appeared only on mobile browsers, the network said, and only between the hours of 2:30 AM ET and 3:05 AM ET.

ESPN posted an apology on their media site, which read in part, "We are conducting a complete review of our cross-platform editorial procedures and are determining appropriate disciplinary action to ensure this does not happen again. We regret and apologize for this mistake."

What are they sorry for? It's like people getting upset over the term spicks and specks. Americans just want to turn every word in the English language into an offensive one.

ESPN is apparently trying to follow in the footsteps of AOL and Yahoo! with the use of "clever" headlines. Beyond that, people are WAY too sensitive about this kind of thing. It was funny. Take it down. But don't go overboard with the apologies. That only makes it worse.

ESPN by my heart is despicable for such things. I would boycott ESPN programs if those responsible for this are not fired.

It can't be racist because Lin isn't African American.

I just wish they would leave him alone.. fine he is a great player, and is doing a great job.. they need to stay away from all of the racial nicknames.. Jeremy appears to be a really sweet, down to earth guy.. I really hate that he has to experience all of these racial slurs just because he's such a great player.

Wow at all of the PC babies in here. Have any of you morons ever heard of this phrase? They don't mean chink as in a racist term you dumb asses. They mean chink as in a dent/weakness. It's a homonym. Do you idiots even know what that is? ****ing morons. They even did an explanation of this in the show Robot Chicken.

As a West coast viewer, it's one more reason to hate ESPN.

That reminds me of Obama's first campaign when newspapers found ways to use words like niggling and jig in their headlines and stories -- all innnocently of course.
