'Luck' Director

Blames TMZ for Killing Show

3/15/2012 8:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Director Michael Mann straight up LIED to the cast and crew of "Luck" yesterday ... insisting the reason the show got cancelled is because TMZ "unfairly spun" the story about a THIRD horse dying on set.

Sorry Michael ... no spin here.

Mann and producer David Milch addressed the staff right after HBO pulled the plug on the show yesterday ... and explained, "If you take a look at the media coverage that has been spun unfairly. If you saw the media coverage ... It's TMZ and everybody else."

Let's take a look at the facts ...

-- THREE horses died on their watch. No spin.
-- Horse #3 was euthanized on the set ... and production continued a few hours later
-- Publicist Karen Jones initially LIED to TMZ about the story ... in an effort to stall us from publishing.

Bottom line -- if the horses were alive, the show MIGHT still be on the air.

Michael: Instead of blaming TMZ, how about putting out a better product? Luck couldn't draw eyes to that show...they only had, what, 400 thousand or so viewers a week? If it wasn't the horses dying on that show, the low viewership might have done you in.

If you click on a members name you can see how long they've been commenting here on TMZ. Pretty funny that most of the negative ones, that don't seem to care a lick about the horses lives, are brand new to TMZ. Guess they're bored and lashing out since they are now UNEMPLOYED!

Scary. Like there's any innocent explanation for 3 dead horses. TMZ did a great service and those idiots sound like they're still gonna try to get that show produced elsewhere.

poor horses. thousands lost jobs while people wearing leather and eating bacon criticize the loss of 3 horses. congrats on the headlines!

Horses get euthanized at race tracks all the time. It's what happens when horses are bred for speed. Who cares. Keep producing the show.

It's good to know that the horses dying on the set wasn't a problem for them, just the way it was reported. I'm glad they feel that beautiful animals repeatedly dying on their watch wasn't a problem for them at all.

Look, nobody likes to see dead animals on set but to throw the baby out with the bathwater is ridiculous. In a time with tons of Garbage on TV, LUCK was one of the better shows. I feel bad for the old horses that died but I feel worse for the cast and crew who are out of a job (that actually filmed in California, not canada)but mostly I'm mad that it's cancelled.

hey HBO d-bag. It's not TMZ's fault you guys didn't properly care for those animals and they died. It's YOUR FAULT. Take responsibility. I will NEVER, EVER subscribe to HBO again. BOYCOTT!!!!

Let's hope they pull te plug on Life's Too Short as well, I wonder how many midgets have died on that set ?!

How can someone as talented as MM be that stupid and irresponsible? It's 100% his fault. After the first death they should have come up with a different plan to film. There are plenty of movies and shows that use horses and they don't die, it's called special effects.

Horses are large, but fragile creatures. The show was great, and great at showing how humans and creatures alike are treated as commodities. I'm sure the show did all it could to provide the horses with proper treatment and care, especially because horses are euthanized for things dogs, cats and humans all can be expected to recover from in time. Horses are just built differently. If it bleeds it leads, and both TMZ and Peta are guilty for HBO's overreaction. This show brought attention to the plight of humans and horses in the racing business. Three horses are dead and countless humans are now out of a job. What was the show supposed to do after a horse is euthanized--have a few days of mourning for the animal? I've witnessed a horse being euthanized after a race at Santa Anita as a kid. It's heart wrenching. But the next race is still run.

Hey Harvey, I hate HBO just as much as you do. Are you being hard on HBO because you are a hard core Dexter & Homeland fan? LOL!!! Anyways, HBO hit bottom even before this latest scandal.

The reason Luck sucked.

I wish people would stop worrying about horses and worry anout humans. Hundreds of jobs were lost over what, a couple horses? Please. The horses were probably insured and the owners made money off their deaths anyway.

Race horses are treated better than humans in general. The have more care than most people do. Unfortunately, they will die from time to time.

Why is it that noone is outraged that a HUMAN stunt man died on the set of the Expendables? They are still releasing the movie and will make lots of money. Its a sad state of affairs that people care more about animals than human beings.

It is a pity and a tragedy that three horses had to die before their time. The fact that they died making this unwatchable show makes it even worse, if that's possible. I was astounded when I read HBO was picking up a second season. I'm sure they are now glad to be rid of it.
