Jason Russell

Naked Meltdown Blamed on

'Brief Reactive Psychosis'

3/21/2012 7:50 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jason Russell
's family has a statement on the "Kony 2012" founder's health ... claiming Russell was diagnosed with "brief reactive psychosis" following his naked meltdown ... and will remain hospitalized for several weeks.

The statement reads, "We would, again, like to make it clear that Jason's incident was in no way the result of drugs or alcohol in his body. The preliminary diagnosis he received is called brief reactive psychosis, an acute state brought on by extreme exhaustion, stress and dehydration."

The statement continues, "Though new to us, the doctors say this is a common experience given the great mental, emotional and physical shock his body has gone through in these last two weeks. Even for us, it's hard to understand the sudden transition from relative anonymity to worldwide attention - both raves and ridicules, in a matter of days."

TMZ posted the video last week ... showing a naked Russell ranting maniacally and slapping the pavement before cops detained him on a 5150 psychiatric hold last week.

Jason's family insists ... Russell "will get better" ... saying, "He is, and will remain, under hospital care for a number of weeks; and after that, the recovery process could take months before he is fully able to step back into his role with Invisible Children."

"During that time, we will focus not on a speedy recovery, but a thorough one."

I believe it. I had that when a lack of sleep turned my post-partum depression into the same thing. I was only getting about three hours of sleep each day for about four weeks. My doctor told me that exhaustion can lead to that if you're not careful. who knew.

Brief reactive psychosis is a sudden, short-term display of psychotic behavior, such as hallucinations, that occur with a stressful event.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Brief reactive psychosis is triggered by some type of extreme stress (such as a traumatic accident or loss of a loved one), after which the person returns to the previous level of function. The person may or may not be aware of the strange behavior.

This condition most often affects people in their 20s and 30s. People who have personality disorders are at greater risk for having a brief reactive psychosis.

Symptoms

A brief reactive psychosis is defined by having one of the following:

Disorganized behavior
False ideas about what is taking place (delusions)
Hallucinations
Impaired speech or language (speech disturbances)

The symptoms are not due to alcohol or other drug abuse and last longer than a day, but less than a month.

Was he lost in the desert, why couldn't he get a glass of water? Such a fake story, they didn't even try very hard to make it sound believable.

how about giving it a rest with the jason naked and ranting video. the guy, and his family, has enough to deal with without tmz re-hashing his 'episode' over and over.

Oh, for God's sake. What does it take in this culture for someone to admit to mental illness? Extreme exhaustion? The extremes we will go to to avoid ever admitting there's anything wrong with our thinking, emotions. Maybe in another 100 years mental health awareness will be somewhere near where physical health awareness is. Maybe not...
