Andy Griffith
only passed away a few hours ago -- but TMZ has learned, the Hollywood icon has already been buried.

A rep for Twiford Funeral Homes in Manteo, North Carolina tells us, Andy was buried at 11:30 AM on his family farm on Roanoke Island. We're told Andy had previously requested to be buried immediately after his death ... so that's why it all happened so fast.

We made calls to find out if Andy was embalmed. No one was talking, but we're told it's legal in North Carolina to bury people without embalming them.

We're told Andy's burial followed a small, private service with close friends and family in attendance.

Andy was 86.

I think most people know Andy from his TV work. If you ever get a chance to buy or rent "A Face in the Crowd" (1957), you'll see Andy's full range of acting as "Lonesome" Rhodes. He's brilliant in this.

R.I.P., Andy. We loved you.

It is not necessary for anyone to be embalmed. As a matter of fact, you can also bury people in a surprising number of places. Do research on the funeral industry and prepare to be astounded. You (we) have been paying for a TON of unnecessary services for death.

In what state is it illegal to be buried without embalming? Has anyone over at TMZ heard of Jewish burial?

It is nobody's business. Why do we need to know if he was embalmed? Give the man some respect.

With the proper permits, you can pretty much be buried anywhere. I recall there's this new movement of people who don't want to buried in caskets in graveyard and such, they want to be buried "naturally" . Of course, you pay a lot of money for that but hey, its legal so why not.

RIP Andy, he was a great role model for many. Never saw him out drunk, jumping on couches, or having all kinds of crazy affairs with umpteen women (or men for that matter)

They don't make them like they used to apparently. He'll be missed.

I hope no one at TMZ ever under-goes S.T.

Sensitivity-Training:

1. Was he embalmed?
2. Face-up or face-down?
3. North-to-East or South-To-West?
4. State of his toes?
5. Date of his last bowel movement, etc.

My deepest condolances-Andy Griffith and my father Edward Johns could have been twins-in youth and in old age/appearances. Edward Johns died unexpectantly two months ago. Andy was a superb actor and will be greatly missed. I once drove 8 hours round trip to see him in Mt. Airy. R.I.P from Michele Johns, Atlanta, Ga.

Good for you, Andy! The paparazzi are probably less than thrilled that their opportunity to exploit someone's funeral was thwarted. Good for you, Andy! Good for you!
