George Lucas

NEW 'STAR WARS' MOVIE

Disney Buys Lucasfilm for $4 Bil

If George Lucas wasn't rich before, he sure as hell is now -- because Disney just bought his movie company Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 BILLION ... and has already announced a NEW STAR WARS MOVIE!!!

Lucas said in a statement, "It's now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers." According to Disney, "Star Wars: Episode 7" is slated for release in 2015.

Lucas will be a "creative consultant" on all new "Star Wars" films.

It's pretty crazy ... considering Lucas said he would never make another "Star Wars" movie -- telling the New York Times, "Why would I make any more, when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?"

Lucas even told us directly back in March ... "Star Wars" was DEAD forever.

Disney is a moneywhoare (sic.) They'll spend this money on buying Lucas Films, but won't blink to layoff employees, excuse me - "castmembers" - once those castmembers are reaching vested years with the company that are deemed too expensive for Mouseschwitz. No respect for this sham of a company.

Somehow I just don't think Johnny Depp would be very good in a Star Wars flick.

OK, let's put this into perspective...

- A whole lot of people had the same, exact reaction when Disney bought Marvel Comics a couple of years ago. And now, although the comic book division ain't what it used to be (the new 'Superior' era sounds pretty terrible....), Marvel Films pretty much OWNS the movie industry right now - "Avengers" is barely out of theaters, yet fanboys are already CREAMING themselves over "Iron Man 3", which is not coming out 'til next April. 'Nuff said.

- Episode 7, 8 and 9 have already being written. Like, more than 20 years ago. Everybody knows that. Which is why a WHOLE LOT of people were uber-piss at Lucas when he said he wasn't going to make anymore more "Stars Wars" movies and none would be made in his lifetime AND beyond. That was a complete d*ck move, pure and simple, especially in light of the fiasco that were the 'prequels'.

- Did some of you miss the part were Lucas said to only be a 'special consultant' on the third trilogy? Anyone remember the episodes we got the last time he was barely involved in the "Star Wars" franchise? Yep... "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi". One of those two is UNARGUABLY the best damn film of the whole series, and the other is way better than 2/3 of the prequels (in my book, "Jedi" is neck-and-neck with "Revenge of the Sith") So really, the equation is quite simply: less involvement from George Lucas = WAY BETTER STAR WARS MOVIES. Plus, whatever INSANE SH*T George would try to put in any of the upcoming movies, you damn well know Disney will have someone on board to take it out of the script - so yeah, with Mickey around, no chance for another Jar-Jar Bink!

There's other positive factors out of this transaction, but, if you only care about watching good sci-fi when you go to the cinema, this news should make you REALLY happy. My only problem with it, though, is it officially makes Disney POWERFUL IN THE MOST RIDICULOUS WAY. Seriously, what the hell doesn't they own at this point!!? Just for a small recap: you got the theme parks, the studios (Disney, Touchstone, Marvel Films, Pixar, Lucasfilms, etc.), the TV network (ABC, ESPN, Disney Channel, etc.), and now, because they got Lucasfilms, Industrial Light & Magic is theirs too, right? How the Earth this is not consider to be a major monopoly? Ridiculous...

But, hey, as long as they give us the good stuff, who cares?

Mr. Lucas sounds tired, can't blame him. Too many arm-chair bloggers doin' nuthin' but bitchin'. He garnered a few bils from the sale of the summer movie blockbuster genre' he created all by himself back in 1977 with very little support from the movie tycoons. Kudos to him. Lucasfilm and Lucasarts created an entire movie\gaming industry, and Skywalker Sound revolutionized the movie industry. I was there when that big ol' Star Destroyer captured the Rebel Corvette that carried Princess Leia in the first SW movie. I remember the good stuff, and I feel that this is a good move for Lucasfilm, Disney, and the Star Wars franchise as a whole.

Well there are two world class movie directors who could do really well taking George Lucas place. I would pick James Cameroon and Steven Spielberg as the most qualified candidates to work on the Star Wars movie. If they are going to make good Star Wars movies, they should listen to the hard core fans opinions regarding what the future events of Star Wars should feature. Given the high level prestige Star Wars has, they should aim to make Oscar caliber films in which audiences world wide will be impressed with everything. George Lucas though should not retire though from Star Wars, he should have some say over the future films even if he is not directing it personally.

Casting

Rumors abound, there was one on floating around twitter about the next Skywalker child and a link to a child actor on a popular casting site (http://nowcasting.com/johnbianchi.) Cute kid, although I'm not sure about it's validity. That being said, I wonder if the Skywalker bloodline will continue.
