**WARNING -- VIDEO CONTAINS REALLY BAD LANGUAGE**

The Cleveland bus driver who fired back at an aggressive female passenger with a FEROCIOUS uppercut to the face ... has been fired by his bus company.

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority has announced ... Artis Hughes was terminated from his job ... for not following policy after he was assaulted by the passenger back in September.

In a statement, the RTA explains ...  "Mr. Hughes claims that his actions were in self-defense. The evidence does not support that claim."

"We expect our employees to diffuse any potential situation. We do not believe that Mr. Hughes took the proper steps to diffuse this situation."

"The proper procedure would have been to pull over and stop the bus, then call Transit Police for assistance."

However, RTA does say ... "The customer was out of line and charges have been filed against her."

Moments after the driver smacked the woman, he told her, "She wanna be a man, I'm gonna treat you like a man."

So far, no comment from the bus driver.

Social contact says men can't hit women, so that gives a lot of them this mental problem that tells them they can act up and get in our faces, hit us, put hands on us, and not expecdt anything, this is sexist in and of itself, what gives anybody the right to sit there and push anyones buttons, disruput business, male or female. What's the saying, you get what you pay for.

This video depicts a female passenger being verbally aggressive with a bus driver, appearing to strike the bus driver, and then being struck in the face by the bus driver and thrown off the bus. It appears from the video that the female passenger initiated the altercation and was aggressive during the entire incident, but that the bus driver escalated the situation. Had this event occurred in Virginia, it would be likely that both the passenger and the bus driver would both be charged with battery. In Virginia, battery is defined as the simple touching of a person by another or by an object set in motion. This means that you can be charged with battery for hitting another with an object or even ordering a dog to attack. Battery is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by high fines and jail time. The fines and jail time would increase if it is determined that the victim was targeted due to race, color, religious conviction, or national origin. In this case, the bus driver claimed he was defending himself and should not have been charged. That would be likely to be successful in a Virginia court; even if the bus driver was struck first, which appears to be the case, he escalated the situation by using substantially more force and then hurling the female passenger off the bus. Self-defense, to be successfully claimed, must be proportional to the threat involved, meaning you cannot take a gun to a fist fight. It is unlikely that a Judge would find that the bus driver’s force was necessary in order to protect himself from an unarmed female, even though she was displaying aggressive behavior. www.mclawva.com

The outpouring of public support for the bus driver is sickening. Not only did he help create the dangerous situation on the bus by not following procedure, his retaliation was extremely excessive and inappropriate. I find it strange that those in defense of the bus driver want to talk about "equality" and "had she been a man" etc..when the fact of the matter is, had she been a man, punching her as hard as he could would not be celebrated to this degree. It truly saddens and disturbs me that it has come to this. It will be your daughters who pay the price of this new wave of violent chauvinism. Mark my words...

After reading some of the comments here I feel almost frightened to go outside. I agree that the woman was out of line but when a man stands up, walks towards a person half their size, and punches them to the ground that is just WRONG. I don't understand how anyone can defend his actions.

I agree he got exactly what he asked for....He could have handle the situation in a more professional manner....He chose to argue back....threaten her...and then call her names...No he did deserve to get hit or be spat on...but he could have followed the company policy and procedure....such as calling the police to have her escorted of the bus....So no he did not sit innocent.....

The bus driver got exactly what he deserved....He could have handle the situation on a professional level....He was just as argumentative...and threatening as she was...He called her names.....that lead to the assault....No he did not deserve to be hit or spat on....but he could have followed company policies...Like calling the police to have her escorted off the bus....No he chose to be just as ratchet as she was....
