8:30 AM PT -- Law enforcement sources tell us ... cops are NOT planning on conducting a criminal investigation into the death at this point ... and believe there was no foul play.

We're told a post-mortem examination (autopsy) is currently being scheduled and is expected to be conducted in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Kate and William's rep has issued a statement on behalf of the royals saying they are "deeply saddened" by the news ... adding, "Their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."

A nurse at the hospital where Kate Middleton was treated for morning sickness this week has been found dead ... and suicide is suspected -- after she mistakenly transferred a prank radio call to Kate's hospital room.

According to law enforcement, the woman was found dead at an address near King Edward VII hospital, where she worked, around 9:30 AM this morning.

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene but were unable to revive her. Scotland Yard is treating the death as a possible suicide.

The woman -- a nurse identified as Jacintha Saldanha -- was the victim of a prank by an Australian radio station, which called King Edward VII hospital on Wednesday pretending to be the Queen of England (with a terrible accent) and asking to speak to Kate.

The nurse immediately transferred the call to Kate's room, where another nurse then nervously explained Kate's condition over the phone. The call was broadcast all over the planet.

The radio station issued an apology just hours after the prank aired, saying, "We were very surprised that our call was put through. We thought we'd be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents. We’re very sorry if we’ve caused any issues and we’re glad to hear that Kate is doing well."

Kate was released from the hospital yesterday.

seriously? i hope this suicide was *not* over the prank because that's just mental.. i can accept (though not really) if she had some deep seeded depression and mental health issues, but over something like that? the person/people who should have done themselves in, were the idiot paps who caused diana's death...

Very sad to hear, but perhaps Jacintha had thoughts about harming herself prior to this prank call publicity. It is hard to understand mentally where people are. Blame should not be put on the radio station.

People don't realize that for every one thing they do brings the "ripple" affect. Did they ever consider that poor nurses career? I think the radio station and its DJ's should be held accountable for their actions. So tragic and unnecessary.

Jacintha Saldanha probably worked her whole life for that position and it was either terminated when she sent that prank call through or she was ostrosized by all of the staff at The King Edward 7th hospital. Those first 24 hours, after a terribly traumatizing situation can feel as if the world is ending and if her colleagues made her feel even worse bc she was the one who sent a prank phone call through (of the supposed Royals) which resulted in the hospitals internal review of phone call procedures, of embarrassment of a hospital known for their patients privacy and as "the" Royal hospital, of terribly embarrassing a friend/colleague worldwide and whose job security may have been threatened.

who are the real bullies? the DJ just ignited the fire, but it was the British public and continued to fuel the fire with ridicule and humiliation.

I can't help but stick up for the DJs in this instance. Yes it was silly of them, but that is what DJs do, be silly. They clearly were making no attempts to be convincing or believable. They had already admitted defeat before they even made the call. They were looking to get hung up on. They actually started laying it on pretty thick at the end just to get the point across but for whatever reason the nurse couldn't pick up on it. I do not mean to pick on who I assume to be a well intentioned nurse who was probably made understandably nervous at the thought of talking to the "Queen", but that audio clip displays a surprising level of incompetence on the part of the hospital staff, specifically the first women who made the transfer, especially for staff meant to be attending to Royals. It just does. They came off as a little dense not to have noticed what was so blatantly happening. If sounds like I'm playing Devil's advocate here, I'm sorry, but there's a fair amount of blame to be placed on the staff. Lay off the DJs.

How terribly sad. I'm sure she thought there was never going to be a way out of this embarrassment. I remember thinking, when I heard the news, that I hope she has a good sense of humor as she's never going to live this down. I hope she wasn't hounded or bullied by anyone. After all, who hasn't pulled a real boner at least once in their life?
