Australian Radio Station

History of Airing

Dangerous Pranks

There's some serious hypocrisy at the Australian radio station that pulled the plug on the Kate Middleton pranksters -- because the station has a history of setting up dangerous stunts ... some purposely designed to cause panic and mayhem.

2DayFM's "Kyle and Jackie O" show aired a segment called "Desperate Acts" back in 2009 ... where a listener was given $1,000 to call her sister and convince her their mother was injured, bleeding, and in need of medical attention.

It worked ... the sister called 911 and sent paramedics speeding to the mother, who was totally fine.

That hoax prompted a police investigation.

Later in 2009 ... Kyle and Jackie O hooked up a teenager to a lie detector while her mother grilled her about her sex life. The stunt blew up in their faces when the girl suddenly revealed she had been raped when she was 12.

That segment led to another police investigation, and got the DJs a week-long suspension.

Additionally, 2DayFM has reportedly been on probation multiple times for violating Australia's broadcast code.

Despite getting repeatedly slapped on the wrist for their stunts ... 2DayFM honchos still signed off on Michael Christian and Mel Greig pulling the Kate prank.

2DayFM's response to the nurse's death has been that "no one could have predicted" the tragedy -- arguably true -- but they've also broadcast stunts where tragedy is not only foreseeable, but desired.

So, canceling the DJ's show ... hypocritical?

A practical joke doesn't push someone to suicide. Those who ridicule incessantly after the joke drove her to her terrible decision. Regardless of all input from outside ourselves, we are our own worse enemy. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem....

let me just say that I live in Australia and I have been watching the 'royal prank' unfold everywhere here. After the initial phone call we all found it hysterical that the crazy accents were put through in the first place. i find it a joke that hospital made a statement after her passing saying that they were not pursuing action against her position at the hospital - of course they would have been, she would have been getting ridiculed by the other staff and management and i think that is what pushed her over the edge, other issues and to top it off, probably losing her job. people need to BACK OFF from the DJ's and not blame them. the media is looking for a scapegoat and they are the easiest targets, they made a mistake they will have to live with forever but one way or another the nurse would have eventually been pushed that little bit to far. my point - leave the DJs the F*** alone

Every comment on here is a carbon copy of each opposing side. We get it. You blame the royals, ridicule, job, and fact it wouldn't have happened.... Or you side w the 'freedom of speach/ doing wtf you want and ppl have been through worse' articles. You talk ab certain 'celebutatds' every day and wish death upon them for their entitlements. My heads wobbling, debate on w your two very obvious points of view.

there is a mentality out there , that appeals to some people ...to humiliate someone
I used to Laugh at Howard Stern , his book left me in stitches.
But , you tend to forget that some people get off on saying or doing anything for attn or money.
This woman that killed herself , just was an innocent bystander ..
She may have been of a different culture , for instance , did she come from a country that has honor killings ,
It is a big world out there and we are not all alike ..Technology makes you interact before you think.
I am sure these DJs feel awful , but given some of the other stuff that didnt stop the station......they pushed the envelope for money and ratings.
this woman wouldnt be the first pushed over the edge by people looking for ratings.either..people should stop and think
they were not calling someone in show business or media ..this woman didnt expect to be pranked

Pretty sure Australians don't call 911 - maybe TMZ should stop putting **** on these DJ's and concentrate on their research instead. Just Saying!!!

Yes, these dj's and station needs to have something done about them. A hospital and sick patient should never have been chosen for a victim to begin with. If your job duties involve pranking then you should know better than to prank Hospitals etc They are there to save lives and care for sick people. They aren't there for the amusement and entertainment of radio dj's. You always take a risk if you prank someone you know nothing about.

Unless a radio show has national syndication it is a pretty low end job. Probably pretty close to minimum wage. What some desperate DJ would do on some small station to try to get famous is no surprise to me. I hope they get some quality time in a cross bar hotel for this.

this was a good report of the situation, everybody is saying they are guilty of murder what a load of BS! it was just a silly prank... how ever you are correct about the radio station they have been guilty of pathetic trash for years and that sleazy creep kyle sanderlands should be in jail..once he suggested that a famous Jewish Australian should have been put in a concentration camp because it would help her loose weight.. this station should be taken off air! its owned by Murdoch too... please continue to rubbish 2day FM

I have just seen your representation of the phone prank from the radio station 2day fm in australia, I am appalled at the way you portrayed 2day fm, I would like all the world.... what was the mental stability of the nurse at the time because even a layman of psychology would know that 1 particular event cannot cause total loss

I find it appalling that the people of the world are blaming a radio station and the DJ's for someone's suicide.. has anyone questioned the mental stability of the victim before this prank was pulled ? .... I haven't heard that question asked at all yet, considering any good psychologist will tell you that it takes more than 1 incident to reach that level
