Huell Howser

Cause of Death Revealed

1/15/2013 3:05 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TV icon Huell Howser -- who hosted KCET's "California's Gold" for 18 seasons -- died after a battle with prostate cancer ... this according to his official death certificate, obtained by TMZ.

Howser passed away at 2:35 AM on January 7 at his home in Palm Springs, CA ... just a short time after he quietly and unexpectedly retired from TV.

According to the death certificate, filed with the Dept. of Health, Huell's remains were cremated ... and his ashes were scattered at sea ... off the coast of L.A. County.

Huell -- who worked as a reporter for "Entertainment Tonight" back in the '80s -- was never married and had no children.  He was 67 years old.

Awwe; so sorry to hear how he suffered. We missed him the minute we heard he left Earth.

Probably everyone reading this has a great memory of how he elevated our knowledge of California with his un-extinguishable charm, humor, quest for knowledge, love for all people-kind and gentleness. Sweet, sweet soul. Rest in peace, Brother Huell. (Sad face.)

Did you know approx. 1/4 MILLION AMERICAN MEN will be diagnosed with prostrate cancer this year?

Straight from The National Cancer Institute's website:

"Definition of prostate cancer: Cancer that forms in tissues of the prostate (a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum). Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men.

Estimated new cases and deaths from prostate cancer in the United States in 2012:
New cases: 241,740
Deaths: 28,170"

Men of vast ages can contract prostate cancer. Here is a link to the most highly-respected cancer institute, The Mayo Clinic, with symptoms, and all sorts of wonderful up-to-date information, etc.:

Don't be too proud - take a spin around these website, LADIES & GENTLEMEN! Like any type of cancer, early detection is key, so if you know the symptoms, that's a great point-of-departure!

Love you, Huell! Miss you, Huell! We will ALWAYS fondly remember you and your contributions!

The New Improved Sock Puppet

RIP but I never heard of his TV show or knew who he was. It's a shame he never came out and lived his life freely.

When I first moved to palm springs in 2008, his show was one of the first ones I watched. We learned a lot about our new state from him. Truly sad he's gone.

James R. - Los Angeles

I wonder if they'll aire the episode where Huell goes to the Speedo factory in Laguna and look at the new line of Speedos modeled by young men?

Would you look at that . . . amazing! Just amazing!

No matter what: R.I.P. Huell Howser.

Yet another very private person that TMZ just cannot respect the privacy of.
What's next? Photo's of Harvey's digital rectal exam?

Seriously - how unnecessary and disrespectful to post his death certificate. I mean REALLY!

LA Native

I just returned from his lovely public service and he will be sorely missed by all of California. This man did not know the meaning of the word enemy, he made friends wherever he went and was always kind and generous, I was lucky to have met him a few times. RIP dear Huell! Loved by all.
