Lil Wayne

CANNED By Mountain Dew

Over Emmett Till Lyric

5/3/2013 2:20 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

0503-mountain-dew-lil-wayneLil Wayne will no longer "do" Mountain Dew ... the soda company announced it's DROPPING the rapper over a rap verse in which he compared the beating of Emmett Till to rough sex.

Wayne was a major spokesperson for Mountain Dew --starring in several commercials. Wayne began appearing in Dew ads in early 2012. Mountain Dew is owned by PepsiCo.

It's unclear when PepsiCo will stop running ads featuring the rapper.

Weezy came under fire back in February over a verse he dropped on the song "Karate Chop" ... in which he said, "Pop a lot of pain pills, 'bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels ... beat that p***y up like Emmett Till."

FYI -- Till was 14 back in 1955 when he was beaten beyond recognition, shot and dumped in a river ... after he was accused of flirting with a white woman in Mississippi. His open-casket funeral and murder trial were early flashpoints in the civil rights movement.

Wayne had sent a letter to Till's family -- saying he's sorry their feelings were hurt by the song ... but the family REJECTED the letter, saying the statement "falls short of an apology."

I love hip hop, but Lil Wayne is waaaaack. His lyrics are elementary and stupid. He's said worse than the Emmet Till thing though and Mt. Dew didnt dump....messed up PC crap.

Why was he ever chosen as a spokesperson?

That's what it took? Pretty low standards to hire him in the first place.

Mountain Dew is dumb. What else did they expect was gonna happen when they hired a wack *ss, controversial rapper? Weezy ain't rapping about pretty flowers, glitter, rainbows, gum drops or unicorns. Major fail on their part.

Have to agree with most, what was Pepsico thinking on hiring him in the first place, does not portray a good public image with all the drug use and his music sucks...lmao

I'm pretty sure PepsiCo knew about his lyrical background. So why hire him? We once had a big event in my town, and a well known rapper started the event. He was pulled during his performance due to his lyrics. I guess people know longer research

Good! Lil Wayne's "apology" did not seem genuine and it took him forever to respond to the family. How could anyone who knows the history of Till pen those lyrics!!! In addition, as a Black man he should even be more ashamed of himself for not understanding the importance of Till's story. smh!

His rhymes don't even make sense half the time. He has no real talent. He won't be around for the long-haul. How many "rappers" have we seen since the 90s that were HUGE at one point and basically a no body the next? The list is quite long. He'll be added to it soon enough if he doesn't OD himself first. This is a non-story about a soon to be has-been.

His lyrics were way outta line, but at least he was man enough to apologize. I say give the guy a break. He's only human. Plus he's been having a rough go lately with all the seizures he's been having. Granted the booze and the drugs don't help anything, but the man has had seizures his whole life. This didn't just start recently. Nor is it the direct effect of too much partying.
