Randy Travis

Fitted with 'World's Smallest Heart Pump'

7/9/2013 2:40 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Randy Travis has been outfitted with a device that's considered the "world's smallest heart pump" ... TMZ has learned.

Travis' publicist, Kirt Webster, tells TMZ ... the singer did NOT undergo heart surgery, contrary to reports, but did have an Impella peripheral left ventrical assist device placed in his heart for "stabilization while transferring hospitals."

According to the company that makes the Impella device, the pump is commonly inserted through a "standard catheterization procedure" -- in which the doctor inserts a catheter into an artery in either the arm, groin or neck and send it all the way to the heart.

We're told the device is considered the world's smallest heart pump -- the same size as a coffee stirrer and smaller in diameter than a pencil.

FYI -- according to the Mayo Clinic, a ventricular assist device (VAD) is "an implantable mechanical pump that helps pump blood from the lower chambers of your heart (the ventricles) to the rest of your body."

Travis' rep insists the procedure is minimally invasive -- and therefore NOT considered heart surgery.

Travis has also issued a statement ... saying, "We are very thankful to the fans for their love and support during this time."

We're told cards and well wishes can be sent to:

To those who are saying this isn't "surgery", please know that it may not be considered "surgery" to you, but the patient is taken into the operating room to put it in. This is a very serious procedure. The left ventricle is the heart's main pumping chamber. So when the left ventricle fails, it is considered heart failure. How serious it is depends on the amount of damage done before he arrived at hospital. He is also dealing with viral cardiomyopathy, which is rare & very serious. There can be so many complications from both problems. It could lead to kidney or liver failure, heart attack, stroke & possibly death. To have to use the heart pump tells me that he is dealing with some serious problems with his heart. As for the chances of recovery, a lot depends on how much damage has already been done to his heart.. This device is not used routinely & is used when the heart failure is severe & they are often used until a heart transplant can become available. I wish him all the best & hope he recovers. Also thinking of his family who I'm sure are extremely worried about him. My husband had a 7 way bypass that failed, so I know how nerve wracking it is waiting for news & hoping for improvement. No matter what you think of Randy Travis, he doesn't deserve the nasty remarks being made. I'm sure his family can use all the prayers you can send right now.

His condition sounds like a sequele to his chronic alcoholism. This ruins all your organs over a period of time. Too bad.

Typically VADs are implanted either as a bridge so to speak before a heart transplant; to rest the heart w/ expected removal of the VAD eventually; or as an end stage/last ditch effort where a terminal outcome is expected eventually when the patient isn't a transplant candidate.

The usage makes it sound like Randy Travis requires the smallest heart pump in the world because he is a bad person.

No amount of surgical intervention or non-surgical intervention will help this man unless he helps himself. An addict makes a decision to use. Randy Travis is no different than any other addict. He is his own worst enemy. He is not a victim. He made a choice.
