Jameis Winston

Signs Cops Covered Up Sexual Assault Allegations

11/14/2013 12:10 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

There's evidence Tallahassee cops tried to sweep the sexual assault investigation targeting Florida State University QB Jameis Winston under the rug to protect the team and its star player ... and ONLY took aggressive steps after TMZ Sports started asking questions.

Sources in the State Attorney's Office tell us they never even knew about the investigation until Tuesday ... JUST ONE DAY AFTER TMZ Sports began making calls to cops about the alleged assault.

Our sources in the State Attorney's Office say ... it was highly unusual cops wouldn't have filled them in about the case until this week.  The sources say cops would have typically notified them when the investigation was completed, and Winston's lawyer reportedly says cops told him it was completed in February.

Now get this ... TMZ Sports started calling police about the case on Monday.  We were told someone would get back to us later that day, but there was radio silence for 2 days ... we made repeated calls Tuesday and Wednesday and no one got back to us until late Wednesday afternoon.

Sources in the State Attorney's Office tell us ... the timing -- getting notified about the case months after it supposedly was closed and just a day after TMZ started calling -- is suspicious.

The State Attorney has now re-activated the case and sent it back to cops for further investigation.

And there's a twist -- guess what would happen if Winston was even CHARGED with felony sexual assault -- under FSU's rules ... he would be AUTOMATICALLY BENCHED ... killing the team's national championship hopes and his Heisman Trophy chances.

This is a horrible attempt to knock the guy down when he is on top. Clearly he's not the guy or he would have been charged already. Don't drag his name through the mud because he was questioned! Shame on you TMZ, report facts, not speculation.

I don't think this was a coverup. Jameis Winston was an unknown redshirt freshman in a 3 way competition for the starting qb position. Clint Trickett was expected to be the next in line until the spring training began. We expected this to be a rebuilding season with 11 players leaving for the NFL. So there was no reason for this to be covered up at all. FSU has dismissed star players Greg Reid, Preston Parker, and Jarmon Fortson for violations in the last 2 seasons. We have 2 other qbs that are good. This whole situation sounds fishy to me, especially the timing.

Well I can clearly tell from this article that TMZ is a fine moral reporting website set on delivering facts. This is absolute garbage. TPD not reporting the case to the state attorney is not "evidence" there was a cover up. Your confusing evidence with speculation. Speculation doesn't belong in investigations or in news reports. TPD already reported to the state attorney that they did not notify them of the case because the "victim" did not want to pursue charges and that there was not enough evidence to make an arrest. Jameis had not even played a game for Florida State when the initial complaint was filed. He was not a star quarterback then. So heres an idea, before you tarnish this young mans name anymore because of speculation, wait until their are actuals facts to be reported. I can't believe people read this site with the kind of trash that is posted. But then again if he is guilty and is CONVICTED he deserves everything he gets.

Clint Trickett, a former prospective FSU first-string quarterback, got more snaps and threw double the passes Winston was allowed in an exhibition that included 4 potential FSU quarterbacks in April of 2013 at the 'Garnet and Gold game'. Winston did extremely well with his limited role in that scrimmage though, and left the mere 30,000 fans in attendance surprised and impressed. A month later Clint Trickett was transferring to West Virginia University where a position as a first-string quarterback would still be in the cards for him. Those two months are about the point FSU football fans BEGAN to learn more about the guy who as of February, when TMZ idiots think cops covered for him, was "just some baseball player I think" (if they actually recognized his name at all, which was unlikely). The worthiness of this story is Duke lacrosse at best, and at worst it's about someone who will probably realize her mistake when standing in front of someone who is 6'4" after describing him at heights that are average to below average.

The question is WHY WAS THERE NO REPORT? Having served in gov't and had police work for me I have found out that they report going to see a cat in a tree. The only time the report never gets filed is if it is another cop, a political figure or another prominent person. BTW I heard of JW almost a year ago as a red shirt freshman and I am from MI so I am certain that local would know him....

You're a bunch of dumb asses. This happened a year ago--so there was no talk of Heismans or titles. Matter of fact, we didn't even have a starter picked yet. Morons. Go write a fluff piece on the Kardashians.

The cops aren't covering for Winston....they are covering for FSU. What university wants a rape scandal tied to them? The police never interviewed Winston even though it happened at his apartment. The rape happened at 2 am, victim reported it at 4 am & had the DNA swabbed. Police never asked Winston for his DNA until NOW. And guess what...it matches! He may be able to play out the rest of the season, but he has zero chance for a Heisman. He should be prosecuted if he raped her. Athletes are not above the law.

Ask any Emergency Room doctor in any college town what percent of supposed rape cases that come in for evaluation are really rape cases. About 2 out of 10. The others are guilty consciences, jilted angry girls etc, embarrassed....etc. A simple accusation does not a rape make! This will turn out to be a mess. His reputation ruined, hers ruined. She has never brought this up or followed up with the police for over 8 months. I am sure that the police department did a good job of investigating and after her refusal to even return their calls plus this total lack of believability of her story just chose to not destroy her life or the life of Jameis because there was no crime in their opinion.
Why doesn't everyone calm down, including the lawyers and States Attorney who is grandstanding and let the facts come in, evaluate them and let it all play out without ruining his life with a premature felony charge, costing him his reputation, the Heisman, and the football TEAM a chance to play for the national championship. She was not upset enough over the last 8 months to even return police telephone calls so why the urgency to now rush thru this and affect so many other events.

To the sports fans out there I have a question. I have been hearing all morning about the Jameis Winston case and I can’t help but to wonder what happens if he is found guilty to the Florida State University football program with the NCAA? After all someone in that program had to know he was being charge and as a program he was not made to come forward. So since the NCAA has already set an example with Penn State does the program get fined, lose games he played in and get suspended from bowl games? If he is guilty, rape is rape whether it is little boys or a girl on campus. The law will deal with Jameis but will the NCAA come down onFSU?

TMZ needs to stick to stalking the stars and stay out of an investigation. Bunch of idiots that couldn't make it in real journalism.
