Paul Walker

How He Ended Up in Death Car

12/1/2013 4:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Paul Walker may not have ever gotten into the car that took him to his death if it hadn't been acting up moments before the crash ... TMZ has learned.

Paul showed up Saturday for a fundraiser at Always Evolving -- Roger Rodas' high end auto shop that specializes in exotic cars. Paul had a stake in the shop.

Sources connected to Roger tell TMZ when Paul arrived ... Roger was watching one of his employees try in vain to back the Carrera GT into the shop, but it kept stalling. Roger decided to take matters into his own hands ... told the worker to get out and took the wheel himself.

As Roger began to back into the garage ... Paul came up and said he hadn't driven in the Porsche yet -- so he jumped in the passenger seat and they took a 20 minute drive.

The fatal accident happened on the way back from that drive -- just 500 yards from the shop.

Paul's best friend from childhood, Nute, grabbed a fire extinguisher and was among the first to arrive on scene. We're told Nute frantically tried to extinguish the flames ... even though it appeared to him both men were already dead.

When the fire dept arrived they tried to pull Nute away, but he was overwrought and punched a firefighter. We're told Sheriff's deputies put Nute -- and several other of Paul and Roger's friends -- in custody, but let them go when they realized the circumstances.

I didn't know him as an actor but the story brings me back to JFK, Jr. ONE bad decision could end it all in minutes....soooo sad!!!

I still keep thinking maybe it was just a bad dream that I had, can't believe he is really gone.

let me see if i've got this straight...a car that is notoriously difficult to drive is having problems, so his instinct is to say "hey, let me ride shotgun in this notoriously difficult car to drive even though it's having problems"? well, he deserved to's necessary to remove stupidity like that....

um didnt ryan dunn die in a porche? should we be outlawing these cars ? how many actors and famous drivers have to die in these before production is stopped!?

Don't know this guy, but in reading about him, he started dating his current girlfriend when she was just 16 and he was 33???

Doesn't that make him a pedophile, or is 16 legal now in CA?

Wow.. the article didn't even clarify the headline. Ok then.

ok TMZ why the dramatization .. really... its a porche not a death car .. these were established high speed drivers who actually did race cars.. its not a death car why not say it like it is... two guys who loved fast cars taking it out for a joy rid that went horribly wrong and ended tragically... speak the truth on this no need to hype or sensationalize things

How Sad,R.I.P.

Sad to hear, but seriously does anybody else think that its morbid that these blogs squeeze every last detail out of these stories. Thoughts are with his family and friends and the family and friends of the driver.

Just like the Corey Montieth coverage I am sure we will have this as front page news for about a week. I hope that at least they let his family grieve in private. There is a huge difference in paying tribute versus the spectacle that we have on the blogs and papers every time someone remotely famous dies. I get that its news but we don't need that many stories on it do we?

All speculation. Whenever a celebrity dies, there are a bunch of theories. Pure and simple , the driver was careless and reckless. The only reason this made the front page was that a celeb died in a fiery crash. Tragic? Yes. Conspiracy? NO!

Nine stories on just page one of TMZ all about Paul Walker. How many more can you squeeze out of this TMZ?

Sad that they died but honestly this is what happens when you combine douchbaggery with horsepower. The driver could have killed someone on the street- well, he did kill his passenger and himself. I've seen so many pedestrians being killed in the news lately from reckless, drunk and distracted and texting drivers. Be safe out there my friends and be aware- whether you're driving or just walking on the sidewalk or in a crosswalk.
