Olympic Swimmer

Brandi Glanville's Racist Comment

Isn't Entirely Untrue

"Real Housewives of Bev Hills" star Brandi Glanville wasn't exactly off-base when she "joked" about black people not being able to swim, 'cause the numbers show race is still an issue when it comes to drowning ... so says U.S. Olympic champ Cullen Jones.

Glanville ignited a firestorm on a recent episode of her reality show when one of her castmates revealed they couldn't swim and Brandi quipped, "You’re a black person!”

She later explained, "It was a joke, and my black friends would have laughed [like] crazy, because they don’t go in the pool because they will get their weaves f**ked up!"

But Cullen Jones -- 4-Time Olympic medalist and 1st African American to break a world record in swimming -- tells TMZ, "[Brandi's comments] seem to be more of a cultural indictment rather than a true studying of the facts, but it is true minorities need more access to lessons!"

"It is unfortunate that race is still an issue associated with drowning in the United States, but in many communities due to lack of access to water, training and funds, minorities are still disproportionately at risk to drown."

In fact, a recent study conducted by a University of Memphis professor shows there are some African-American women who refuse to learn how to swim because they are worried about having to get their straightened hair wet.

Still, Cullen says, "Drowning is preventable, we need to address the staggering numbers of unwanted deaths of our future Presidents, doctors, teachers and scientists."

Englewood Co rec. center gives free and low cost lessons to minorities and low- income families. So learn if your community rec centers offer programs.

I am a black female. I am an Aquatics Director and the Head Coach of a swim team. I do agree with Cullen, there are too many African American Children that do not know how to swim. I also think Brandi is extremely ignorant and I think she is way too old to act and speak the way that she does. You can't be that inappropriate and expect all of us to go with the excuse I'm just being real. Be real enough to act your dawn age.

TMZ, Arryan from Big brother told an Asian to go make rice and we all nearly shiz our pants. News Flash - Asians make rice.. She also said to watch out for Candace at night, (black girl) because you probably won't see her in the dark. Newsflash - you can't see anything in the dark. In fact, most racist jokes are true.. It's the generalizations about race that makes it racist.

What's the big deal with someone making a joke about any race. There are many characteristics and traits that have been associated with Caucasian's that black comedians and people have joked about for years such as: Speech, walk, dancing....etc. Everybody too sensitive these days. Italians are often joked about and nobody thinks anything of it. As long as the real sensitive issues regarding ones ethnicity isn't the source of a joke it's fine. Subjects such as slavery, discrimination, lynching's, the holocaust and any other egregious acts associated with a particular ethnicity should never be joked about however other general subjects are fair game. People need to slip on their big boy boots in the morning and man up......collectively we have become a sissified politically correct nation of cry babies...

Although I believe in "It is who you are and not what you are", I find it amazing that Brandi and Paula Dean get such ridicules, but Kenya from Real Housewives of Atlanta and others on that show don't make the news for her/their "Cut me to the White Meat" comments. I find that very offensive! If you are going to ream us "white folks", as they like to say, then how about including all?

This issue shouldn't be trivialized, there is a problem, and it should be addressed.
