Richard Heene (born September 11, 1961) is best known as the dad of "Balloon Boy"- a hoax that gained national media attention in October, 2009. Heene, who is an amateur storm chaser, launched a large balloon into the atmosphere. The family has said the balloon was a transportation prototype and it was launched as part of an experiment. Heene then called 911 and the media, claiming his then six year old boy, Falcon, had climbed into the balloon. After massive media coverage and rescue efforts, Falcon was discovered hiding in the family's garage. Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail for the hoax, and ordered to may more than $35 in restitution to cover the rescue costs.
