Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur was a rapper who was shot and murdered in 1996 in Las Vegas. He was born on June 16, 1971 to Black Panther Party members Billy Garland and Afena Shakur. At birth, he was named Lesane Parish Crooke, but his mother soon renamed him Tupac Amaru Shakur. His mom was jailed during her pregnancy on bombing charges, but was acquitted soon before giving birth. Shakur spent much of his childhood in the Bronx and Harlem and then moved around the country with his mom. He attended Baltimore School for the Arts before setting roots in Marin County, CA. He got his acting start at 13-years-old in “A Raisin in the Sun” at the Apollo Theatre and later became a dancer and roadie for rappers Digital Underground. He appeared on some of the group’s albums and launched a solo career when he signed with Interscope in 1991. Shakur also appeared on screen in “Juice,” “Above the Rim,” and “Poetic Justice.” Shakur had many run-ins with the law involving gun violence, assault, and sexual abuse charges and did some prison time. He found himself in the middle of the famous West Coast vs. East Coast rap battle. Death Row label CEO Marion “Suge” Knight” paid $1.4 million bond to get Shakur out from behind bars and signed the rapper to his label. The song lyrics on Shakur’s album “All Eyez on Me” spoke about forecasting his inevitable early death, threatening his enemies, and claiming to have slept with Faith Evans, the wife of Notorious B.I.G. Following an argument at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Shakur was shot in the passenger seat of Knight’s vehicle on September 7, 1996. Shakur died on September 13 at the age of 25. Notorious B.I.G. was murdered just six months later. No murder charges have been filed in either case. Shakur was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2017. He is the first solo rapper to receive this honor. Shakur’s brief marriage to Keisha Morris from 1995-1996 was annulled. He was in a relationship with Kidada Jones, the daughter of Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton, at the time of his death.
