EXCLUSIVE: Gibson Skated Twice Before

7/31/2006 2:06 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned that Mel Gibson has been stopped for reckless driving two other times in Malibu but he was allowed to leave without a ticket or arrest.

As TMZ first reported, Gibson was arrested on Friday for suspicion of driving under the influence on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu -- driving 87 miles an hour. As we reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered to sanitize his arrest report to make it appear that Gibson's arrest was "without incident." In fact, The report states Gibson was abusive, violent and vulgar, and even attempted to escape.

TMZ has confirmed that approximately three years ago, Gibson was driving 74 miles per hour on Pacific Coast Highway, one mile from his house, when he was pulled over by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy. Sources say Gibson avoided eye contact with the deputy during the stop and even though the deputy was suspicious of Gibson's sobriety, he let him go.

Approximately one year ago Gibson was stopped again, after driving 64 miles an hour on Pacific Coast Highway -- where the speed limit is 45. Sources say that Gibson was so cocky that he was on his cell phone the entire time he was detained by the deputy. Ultimately, the deputy decided to let him go without giving him a citation.

And there's new information about Friday's arrest.

As TMZ reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered by superiors to re-write his report and eliminate all references to Gibson's bad conduct and anti-Semitic remarks. Sources tell TMZ that Lt. Crystal Miranda told the arresting deputy that Captain Tom Martin talked to Sheriff Lee Baca who expressed concern that the explosive report might leak to the media and that it needed to be re-written in a sanitized form.

Sources say Gibson, who was pulled over early Friday morning for allegedly crossing lanes at a high speed, told the arresting deputy that he was leaving home just after 2 a.m. and heading to his brother's house. The arresting deputy found a bottle of tequila in the car, 3/4 full, in a brown paper bag. We're told that Gibson told the deputy that the bottle wasn't his but, "I've had a little bit."

We're also told that Gibson, who issued a statement over the weekend, suggesting he was not of sound mind when he uttered the anti-Semitic tirade and engaged in abusive behavior, was not in fact "out of it." Sources connected with the case tell TMZ that Gibson was drunk but was in control of his senses. At one point at the Sheriff's station, sources say Gibson was "jumping like a monkey" on a steel cage and told the arresting deputy, "I'm not going to hurt you physically. I'm gonna hurt you. I'm gonna make you lose."

We're also told that deputies at the Sheriff's station were star struck by Gibson and a number of them went to Gibson's holding cell to get a look of the star. The problem for the Sheriff's department -- there's a mounted camera in the station and the deputies can be seen fawning over the actor. Sheriff's officials have called some of the officers who were caught on tape in and warned them they might be subject to discipline.

As TMZ reported, the arresting deputy was ordered by officials to take out references to Gibson's bad behavior. We're told the altered report makes no mention of the fact that Gibson attempted to flee the scene by running to his car to escape. We're also told that the officer checked a box on the report that Gibson was "belligerent." Ironically, even though officials did not order the deputy to remove that reference, they did order him to re-write the report to eliminate all references to the supporting evidence leading the officer to believe Gibson was indeed "belligerent."

is it any coincidence that on the same day that the IDF bombed and killed scores of Lebanese children that their most-hated person, Mel Gibson, was arrested for making 'anti-semitic' statements? I demand a full audit of the sheriff's and county's books. There will most likely money found unaccounted for. This came from someone high up in Hollywood or from the Mossad. I demand a FULL toxicology of Mel Gibson to find evidence of the drugs (most likely a tincture of LSD and Rophynol) that the zionist agent slipped in his drink prior to calling the cops to arrest Mel. Its clearly a false-flag operation by Isreali agents, or at minimum, a Hollywood zionist who supports them to take the press's attention away from their ethnic-cleansing campaign in Palestine.

I for one, believe that the truth comes out when someone gets drunk. I lived with an alcoholic. Mel Gibson has admitted his struggle with alcohol in the past and how he has "fallen off the wagon". It seems likely to me that he's one of those celebrities who feels they should carry on without repercussions. I believe that he was verbally abusive and made numerous remarks. Why else would the arresting officer be told to RE-WRITE his deposition? Can you imagine anytime you had been pulled over for whatever reason that the cop rewrote the report to make it look less than what it was? I think there's a lot of truth to the story. It doesn't effect my life, but I wonder how big directors like Steven Speilberg will feel. I wonder if it will impact Mel Gibson's career. The statements that he allegedly made are apparently true. Mel Gibson made a statement about how sorry he was and how there's no excuse for his behavior, etc...
That's just my opinion

To all you "Gotcha" people out there, including the media people reporting this unfortunate event in Mel Gibson's life and who are making sure all of us know where to go to get the minute details of his fall. Mel made his money from the millions of Christians out there who believe in the God of second and third chances. As a matter of fact 70 times 7, How about that? We also believe in forgiveness and not judging others, because the God that so many people( who didn't give Mel Gibson a dime, who are now gloating over his illness and battle with the family curse of anti-semitism) deny, will forgive Mel his transgressions and warns anyone, who will wake up that He will judge us by the same standards that we judge others. So, those of you who know God, pray for Mel. And for those who don't know God( and it's obvious who doesn't), all believers need to pray for them.
As for Mel, he will be fine, because his fate doesn't rest with the movie moguls. It rests with someone more powerful, Who loves him and forgives him and is cleansing him of all parts of him that are unclean. How awesome is that!

Obviously, there is something deeply wrong with Gibson. All Gibson had to do was cooperate with the police, treat them respectfully, etc. His cooperative behavior would have been listed in their report and publicized. This is what people would have remembered. Even if he was found to be DUI, it would be deemed a mistake. Mostly he would have been forgiven. His public image would not be all that affected. But due to Gibson's arrogance, crazy comments and off the wall behavior -- he has completely ruined his career and reputation. He did it to himself. Normal people, drunk or sober do not behave this way. I have always thought that Gibson produced “The Passion” to assuage his personal feelings of guilt. I also believe that Gibson’s most recent behavior with drinking and driving and subsequent conduct with the police, has to do with Gibson’s conscious or subconscious compulsion towards self destruction due to a deeply felt sense of guilt.

What these "news" reporters seem to overlook is that making anti Semitic comments is PERFECTLY LEGAL, so why SHOULD they be in any police report? As far as Gibson getting off from speeding, I've seen that happen before and heck, it happened to me once, and I'm no celebrity.

iam more concerned with the "passes" he received from the police than his anti jewish ravings. his erratic driving can kill more people than his stupid remarks. the allegations, if true do more to fault the police than the rantings of a drunken bum!

Forget the Mr. Gibson's outrageous behavior or what he said. My problem is with the local law enforcement authority or the lack of a local law enforcement authority. I guess money buys leniency and crooked cops.

Does anyone remember gibson's homophobic remarks to the press about the homosexuals "taking it up the rear" and how much he despises them? No? Gee, I wonder why? Could it be that derogatory remarks about gays don't get the press that anti-semitic remarks get? The incident I am speaking of was even video recorded and it got little if any response outside the gay community. Now we know he hates gays and jews? Anyone other minority want to get in line? Who is also on his "enemies list"? What a good christian he makes. Ha!

I dont understand what the problem is with the passion of the christ, go read the bible.....The people who called for Jesus to be crucified were in fact the Jewish people. It is in black and white in the bible. The "truth" doesn't make Mr. Gibson anti-sematic. He merely was trying to present what the "truth" was according to the bible. Everybody says stupid shit when they are drunk. If he is an alcholic then he needs to get treatment.

We were not there when he was arrested, so we do not know what he said.

So, let us summarise what this means. As I understood if from another website, which is what lead me onto your website, Mel Gibson is now being investigated for Anti-Seimitism because he basically spoke out about the Israel's current Operation Massacre of Lebanon. As a result there is speculation regarding the potential destruction of his career! So basically what you're telling us is that in America, or rather in the world, if you create a movie about the life of Jesus Christ, it is seen as anti-Semitic, if you do not endorse the unjustified massacre of an entire nation, it is anti-Semitic, and you ruin your entire career as well as be under investigation for being Anti-Semitic. And yet the US has the AUDACITY to preach to the world about it's first amendment and about democracy. Excuse me, but what democracy?! And freedom of speech my foot! I think it's about time you stop the hypocracy of preaching these two things that you are so unable to practice!

And another thing, nobody can say a damn word about Israel, particularly when they are speaking the truth, without losing their job or being investigated, but Israel can massacre the innocent, perform ethnic cleansing (and this isn't the first time), and destroy an entire country, for no justifiable reason (please don't attempt to use Hizbollah as an excuse anymore), and they shall not only be supported, they shall be encouraged by the United States, who are so proudly and kindly sending them ILLEGAL weapons in an ILLEGAL fashion! Wow, truly amazing isn't it! Who are the real terrorists here? Please leave Mel Gibson alone! Just because he had the back bone to tell the truth he's now getting all this grief! Well the truth hurts so deal with it!

give the guy a break. the only reason so much time and effort is being paid to this situation is because of his fame and the movie he made.
anyone who has been drunk, at any level, is obnoxious, rude, belligerent and inclined to shoot their mouths off about anything regardless of what they personally believe. Mel Gibson is just as human as the rest of us. his fame and money does not separate him from experiencing the frailties we all do.
Mel has apologized, the LA Sheriff's Dept deems the arrest "without incident" and that should be good enough for the rest of the world, tabloid journalists included.

...I'll be sober tomorrow, and you'll still be ugly...Mr. Gibson was being "Mel" early friday morning. Booze doesn't make you a racist, but it can bring the racist in you out...Mel got outted...now, if only every other racist, homophobe, bigot, jerk-off, etc., would come out of the closet, we'd all be a lot better off. Fore-warned is fore-armed, I always say...THANKS MEL!!!!
