Garrison Keillor: A Prairie Homophobic Companion?

Garrison KeillorTaking a page from the Ann Coulter Handbook, alleged humorist and "A Prairie Home Companion" radio host Garrison Keillor has made some queer comments about homosexuals and gay parents.

In an article titled "Stating the Obvious" in salon.com, the Minnesota author wrote, "The country has come to accept stereotypical gay men -- sardonic fellows with fussy hair who live in over-decorated apartments with a striped sofa and a small weird dog and who worship campy performers and go in for flamboyance now and then themselves. If they want to be accepted as couples and daddies, however, the flamboyance may have to be brought under control. Parents are supposed to stand in back and not wear chartreuse pants and black polka-dot shirts." Apparently, Keillor's research consisted entirely of watching a Netflix copy of "The Birdcage" and reruns of "Queer Eye."

The droll lamenter also whined about how "... gay marriage will produce a whole new string of hyphenated relatives ... and I suppose we'll get used to it." Keillor then rambled on about the joys of growing up in a "mixed-gender marriage" during a time when, "Everyone had a yard, a garage, a female mom, a male dad, and a refrigerator with leftover boiled potatoes in plastic lids." Go to your room, Beav.

2. As someone who works in the motion picture industry, I will tell you this. The VAST MAJORITY of gay men are as butch and even more so than many of the alledgedly straight men in this town. What you see in comedy, what sells is flamboyant, over the top behavior. That is a small minority of the gay men I know, and I know many. I have a gay friend who could probably be a heavyweight boxing champ if he wanted to be, but he'd rather be a producer making his own specials.

3. I think he had a really obvious point. Stop being so surprised some people are gay, he obviously accepted it, though he doesn't approve of it.

I think homosexuality is wrong, and disgusting, does that mean I am not a real human? Or that I should be heckled since I have an opinion? Nope. Does that mean I am going to track down gays and heckle them? Nope. Do I care my last roommate was gay? Nope Do the gays think they need to be accepted by everyone or America is a big fat bigot, and a meany? Oh hell ya girl.

6. if the best thing you can say to insult gay people is saying that "normal parents dont wear polka dot shirts" your PATHETIC! stop fearing the unknown and branding all gay men as trendy fashionistas with "striped couches and small dogs" its really sad how sterotypical you are! IF two gay people love each other enough to take a child that someone else couldnt take care of, dont they deserve a loving family regardless of their sexuality? get your head out of your ass IGNORANUS!

9. I'm glad more people are speaking out and I wish even more would. And before you all get riled, I don't hate people of any persuasion/nationality/religion/etc, I just don't like what is being done to this nation in the name of political correctness.

11. If any of you morons actually listened to the show itself; you would realize the satire and dry humor that accompanies all those "dont take life so damn seriously" wonderful stories.

13. yeah and in that world all the gay dads were cheating on their wives with the other in the closet husband across the street. Isn't it better for people to be true to their sexuality instead of being in the closet. As a gay male i was very depressed when i was in the closet ever since i came out i have been very happy. It hurts being different especially when you are born that way. I think we as a society should accept that people are different why waste so much time hating people who are different why cant everyone just get along regardless of race or sexuality. we are all humans we are all equal we are all in this worl together why cant we all work together. That's the world that i want to live in where we all get along where the world is colorbling and where regardless of sexuality we all live together. By the way i am a white gay male so no every white person is racist even though i know it seems that way on here because there are a bunch are trailer park trash white who post racist comments. Any white person who posts a racist comment is nothing but a piece of sh---t they give white people a bad name.

14. Give me a break TMZ. If you knew anything about Garrisons show and his style of story telling you would see this is sarcastic humor. In fact, it sounds like he is taking a shot at people that really think all homosexuals are really like this sterotype. TMZ quit trying to create controversy where there is none!

15. This is nothing compared to the hateful words of recent "gay-bashers." It is a modest opinion and quite eloquently worded I might add. Although I'm not sure I agree with his statements, I hardly think it is fair to lump him in with that sn@tch Ann Coulter.
