Ike Turner Has Died

ike turnerTMZ has confirmed that music legend and the former Mr. Anna Mae Bullock has died. He was 76.

Turner apparently died in his home in San Marcos, Calif., just outside of San Diego.

Sources close to the family tell TMZ he may have died in his sleep.

TMZ caught up with the R&B star back in May after the legend spent a night in jail after his bogus arrest over a recalled 1989 warrant.

Ike was married four times, most famously to Tina Turner. The famous singing duo had seven top ten R&B songs and famously divorced in 1978 amidst his constant abuse towards her.

Ike has four known children: sons Ike Jr., Michael, Ronald and daughter Mia.

The Recording Academy issued the following the statement about Turner's passing: "There is no doubt that Ike Turner was one of rock and roll's great architects with his genre-defying sound as an instrumentalist and bandleader ... As a two-time GRAMMY® Award winner and recipient of The Recording Academy's 2004 Heroes Award, Ike's legacy as a groundbreaking pioneer in the music industry will never be forgotten."

151. I was Ike's drummer from 2001-2006. In short, he was not the man that he was portrayed as by the media. I was there when he passed away, and it was about 10:50-11am on Wednesday the 12th.

It's a strange thing that his whole band was gathered at his home for a surprise party- we were the ones who got the surprise!

Ike always said "Man, when I have my band behind me, I can do anything". It's with that spirit that leads me to believe 100% we were brought there for him so that he could pass on. He was scared of dying, just as he was always a little frightened about going on stage. His band backed him up for his final gig, and that was "crossing over" to the other side.

When I read comments by the uninformed about how he was an evil guy, he was an abuser, etc...the old "party bylines" that are espoused....I actually feel a bit sorry for the writer; usually it's someone who has no clue as to who/what Ike's life turned into, and 99% of the time it's a self-righteous "believer" type whom, with such fervor as they bash Ike, exemplify a hypocrisy that is rivaled by none. The man made mistakes. He paid until the very end for his darkest moments in life, and still posthumously he cannot shake the stigma that was branded upon him.

Nevermind that he created this wonderful thing we know as "rock & roll". Nevermind that his stigmata raised awareness towards domestic violence. Nevermind that he was a gentle and caring soul that would extend to his friends whatever he could, should they come to him in need. That's the Ike I remember.

And to be invited into his home for that final day of his life- to literally witness his final breath and passing. I cannot think of a better gift; one that will be surpassed by very few. After all, the people who were there in his home were his most trusted and closest friends. I feel honored to have been among them. I guess my quest to speak kind of the man who I knew not as a monster or villain, but as a friend and mentor who showed me the path towards being a better person and overcoming obstacles. I miss him dearly already.

153. So...Who's next?

1) Kevin DuBrow - best known for being the singer of 80s metal band 'Quiet Riot'
2) Ike Turner - best known for beating the flapjack out of Tina Turner.
3) Hmmmmm.....

Could be a good dead pool...
I'm going to say that sine the trend is an entertainer who has anger issues - Boy George will be the next to go.

LOL!

156. If he was as abusive as they say he was to Tina, very few will miss him. Though I respect his musical knowledge and genius, no man and I mean no man should physically or mentally abuse a woman or a child. Any man that beats a woman is a loser to the 10th power and would think twice before hitting another man. You hit a woman because you are a woman deep inside and resent it.

159.
My Rocket 88
by Ike Turner and recorded by Jackie Brenston

You may have heard of jalopies,
You heard the noise they make,
Let me introduce you to my Rocket '88.
Yes it's great, just won't wait,
Everybody likes my Rocket '88.
Gals will ride in style,
Movin' all along.

V-8 motor and this modern design,
My convertible top and the gals don't mind
Sportin' with me, ridin' all around town for joy.
Blow your horn, Rocket, blow your horn

Step in my Rocket and-don't be late,
We're pullin' out about a half-past-eight.
Goin' on the corner and havin' some fun,
Takin' my Rocket on a long, hot run.
Ooh, goin' out,
Oozin' and cruisin' and havin' fun

Now that you've ridden in my Rocket '88,
I'll be around every night about eight.
You know it's great, don't be late,
Everybody likes my Rocket '88.
Gals will ride in style,
Movin' all along.

160. Ike may have had his ups and downs and may have not been the sharpest knife in the drawer but we must all admit that he was a good entertainer and the "Ike & Tina Review" was once the best entertainment one could enjoy on the Black circuit. I am saddened by Mr. Turner's passing and it is sad that respect for him is not shared by this site while calling him "Mr. Anna Mae Bullock". I believe that Ike made a name for himself in the music field when he was with Tina... he did have problems in anger management and practiced "old-school" tactic by beating his woman due to jealousy and his inadquacies that lead him to feel threatened by Tina's notariety and fame. Little did he know that he and Tina made the show and the audiences loved the idea that they performed so well together as a husband and wife on stage. May God give peace to his soul and render unto him a final resting place in the heavens.

161. Despite the disturbing personal lives of Ike Turner and Phil Spector, the recording they did with Tina of "River Deep, Mountain High" is one of the greatest songs ever committed to vinyl.
#110, I thought Sam Phillips discovered Elvis Presley...
