Asian Suing Miley Delivers Kung Pow to Judge

So you're suing Miley Cyrus, claiming she defamed 1,000,000 Asian Pacific Islanders in L.A. County by taking a picture while making squinty eyes ... so how do you gain favor with the judge -- call him a racist.

Lucie Kim and her lawyer, Henry Lee (not the OJ Simpson forensics dude Henry Lee) claim the judge crossed the line in a hearing last week by repeatedly referring to Asians as "oriental." They say the word "oriental" is "an offensive, derogatory racial insult to persons of Asians descent ... akin to using the word N---er.

Kim and Lee want Judge Robert Hess to remove himself from the case.

4. I agree with #3! Go to work and get your own money. Are you that insecure that you are offended? the other day I saw an oriental open his eyes wide. I think I will sue him for making fun or Latinos.

7. the lawsuit is completely stupid, but I do agree with the issue with the judge. "Oriental" is an object, not a person. it's a french word for Pete's sake, not asian. You can buy an oriental rug, but you cannot date an oriental. dig?

8. Oriental is offensive? Since when? I thought the orient was was full of mystery and magic, exotic goods, spices, some of the most beautiful women in the world... Why would someone object to being called oriental if they're from the orient? I'm not getting it. Apparently I need to be enlightened.

9. What a complete waste of our tax dollars. Even if Miley meant to be racist with that photo, which I doubt was her intention, that's her right as an American. I can't believe this is actually being taken seriously.

11. seems everybody is sensitive or oversensitive to any reference to race or religion. To bad some weren't around in the 40"s when every one with a German last name was called a Nazi! Get a life and bear with it--even our President is accused of "showing the sole of his shoe as an insult to Arabs"/

12. 100% agree with removing the judge.
the word Oriental, is a reference to a 'thing' and not a 'person'. example: oriental rug, lamp, mural, boat, etc
asian, or asiatic is the term used to describe a person. this is not new information, and anyone working with the public or on a case with racial undertones should know this and be more sensitive to this.
not much difference to the N word with people of color. kike, for people of jewish descent, and other derogatory names directed at backgrounds.
although i think the lawsuit is a bit much, i support the idea of informing the public of this negative connotation. miley cyrus is young and stupid in general, so ANY thing she does is offensive to many people. i don't think it deserves a paycheck unless the funds are going into a public service announcement.

15. Okay, I enlightened myself... with the dictionary:

ori·ental·ly adv.
Usage Note: Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Orientalmeaning "eastern"is that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.
