What It Takes To Keep Paula on 'Idol'

8/7/2009 10:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Paula Abdul on 'Idol'Sources tell us Paula Abdul will make a deal with "American Idol" if the price is right -- and we're told that price is $10 million a year.

We've already reported well-connected "Idol" sources say they haven't closed the door on bringing Paula back for season 9. We're told they have not communicated with Abdul since she tweeted her goodbye, and auditions start Friday -- without Paula.

But here's the deal. Our sources say Paula was not happy with the "Idol" offer but willing to sign -- just days before her deal-breaking tweet. She had a sudden change of heart, largely because she felt "disrespected" by "Idol" execs who had offered Simon and Ryan a lot more than they offered her. We're told the show offered her around $4 million a year.

In the end, we're told the magic number is $10 mil. If "Idol" antes up, they can buy a loose cannon.

**Check out yesterday's TMZ Live -- when Harvey and Charles answered your questions about Paula's fate and Debbie Rowe showing up to Dr. Arnie Klein's office again.

The U.K.'s Daily Mail is reporting that Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham will appear as a guest judge on “American Idol." Does TMZ have any information on that? Personally I think Ms. Beckham would be brilliant in that role.

Question about Debbie Rowe:

Is it true that Katherine Jackson only has custody unitl the kids are comfortable with Debbie and then they will go and live with her. Even Blanket.

The reason producers may be intrerested in bringing her back has to do not so much with her but her chemistry with Simon Cowell. They don't know if any other woman, no matter how talented and charismatic, would be able to get that kind of spark going.

Old White Boys at Fox don't like paying a Brown WOMAN the same as the men!! Simon and Ryan are making WAAAAY too much $$$. Old boy network should die.

If they're going to keep Paula, they need to get rid of Randy and bring in MC Skat Kat.

But no, seriously. 10 mil? Take two steps back, Paula, and get a hold of yourself! You're not Madonna, you never were and never will be, you should be grateful that anybody even still wants you for anything other than a Tuesday night... well, you get my point.

Paula lip synchs to computer tweaked songs. Is that "talent" worth $10 mil?

American Idol makes a fortune and can certainly afford to make Paula's salary competitive with the other 3. I don't feel Kara adds anything to the show so can her and up Paula's take. I too am curious about Randy since no one has mentioned his take home. I think the execs are crazy trying to save a few bucks to mess with a dynamic that has worked for almost a decade. Love her or hate her she has been the one creating the most "buzz" for AI and would be missed.

LET HER GO. Simon makes the show and surprisingly Ryan Seacrest has become a favorite as well. 10 million for a judge who possible had a sexual relation with a contestant, is constantly crying about the men and looks high all the time. DAMN LET HER GO.

10 million? LOL Paula. All you do is cry when someone is done singing. You sit there, looking like a crazy person on the wrong meds. You are NOT worth 10 million, my dear.

Once they agreed to pay Seacrest $15 mil. a year and allowed him to make the number PUBLIC, that set the bar for Abdul to demand more. Had they included a confidentiality clause in Seacrest's new contract, this public circus could have been avoided. I've never heard of such a thing -- to allow him to make the number public while negotiations with other show participants were still pending!!

It is beyond ridiculous to pay Seacrest -- who is merely the HOST -- more than is paid to one of the contributing panel of stars. She was NOT offered $4 mil a year, she was offered $12mil. over THREE years, or $3.33 million per year. Compared to Seacrest's $15 mil, that is a stinging slap in the face.

They will end up making a final offer of $7 per year over three years, or $27 mil in total -- and she will take it. (And 19 Entertainment should learn to put a muzzle on the people who work for them.)
