Conan O'Brien, NBC Settlement - One Final Thing

1/20/2010 8:40 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Conan O'BrienConan O'Brien and NBC are one issue away from sealing a settlement deal -- and the ball is in Conan's court.

Conan has asked for $600,000 more in severance money for his staff. Sources tell TMZ NBC has told Conan's lawyers they will ante up something extra, but only if this is Conan's final demand.

As we first reported, NBC has already offered to pay Conan's staff a total $7.5 million. And his E.P. will rake in $4.5 mil himself and that's not part of the $7.5 mil.

A source close to the negotiations tells TMZ ... even if the network has to pay $600,000 more... it will still make money with the deal, considering they project they could be $45 million ahead if Conan leaves and Jay retakes the helm of "The Tonight Show" (because Jay would make $40 mil in a year and Conan is projected to lose $5 mil).

A network source says he expects it will all be a done deal tonight.

So let's see. The severance package went from $7.5 million to $8.1 million.

$8.1 million/200 = $40,500 which is only $3,000 difference per person.

$40,500 would be the most everyone would get if it was divided equally among 200 staff, but it won't be. Even though Ross' $4 million plus is not included, it does appear people like Andy Richter and Max Weinberg are. If Ross is getting that much, I think it's safe to say Richter and Weinberg are getting pay outs in the $1 million plus neighborhood. It seems to me that O'Brien is taking care of his inter circle who he plans to take with him to his next gig, and the rest of his employees are being left out in the cold in a very bad job market.

I have to agree with NBC, even though I hate to, that the haggling over the $600,000 was posturing and a PR move on Conan's part.

If I were conan I wouldnt have said anything and let it wash over.

i would have requested more control over the program if I (aka Conan) were to move to 12:05 slot.
1) ownership rights of the content created and where it can go, the charcaters, sketches, etc.

2) assurance all the staff will remain paid similar or an incentive for moving times

3a) have security zone that he will not lose his job or the show if ratings are not significantly increased over an X period of time.

3b) if the show at 1130 whether its Jay Leno or whom/whatevr is at that spot ddrops ratings, loses his show, off the air or otherwise unable to maintain that spot, he has authority and the right back to the spot top priority.

3c) Also grant Conan & Jimmy Fallon, veto priveleges that if during a significant amount of time of the new move and the 1130 is not favoring them as lead ins or helping with their viewership that they can veto it and have it moved or taken off the air completely.

i think cone got the better of himself lost in all this unfortunately.
Idk if ill watch late night programs anymore. such a mess.
=(

btw i am/was a fan of Team CoCo.

Let me know when Jay is actually funny, and stops telling his "yuk yuk" jokes...or making perverted comments.

I'll be watching Conan wherever he ends up; in the meantime it will be Letterman.

@Rowan, you failed to mention that Leno also did the same during the strike. Plus, he also went on to do free shows in Detroit when the economy there tanked.

As some posters mentioned, I'm sure Andy got quite a bit, and some closer to Conan will also get more. That leaves a tiny bit for the rest of the staff, who has left their homes back east to come out here.

You mentioned that Conan will fork out some dough to his staff. Let's see if that will happen.

When my bosses have been fired, I usually lose my job, too, but I sure as hell have never gotten severance pay in the process.

I guess times have changed.

I notice that all the COCO Nuts want Jay to leave the Tonight Show and RETIRE (and/or die of a heart attack)
They want him completely out of "show business"

I believe that deep in the heart of hearts...they are afraid of Jay starting a new show at 11:30 either on ABC or Fox.
With Jay,Letterman and COCO all on at the same time...and fighting for the same audience....COCO would run a poor third.

( They keep saying that if COCO had more time he would catch up with Letterman - just as Jay had done...and this could possible be true...in the long run )
The problem comes with a three way split of the 11:30 audience...Jay and Letterman - as proven audience attractions - would probably do fairly well...
leaving the COCO version of the Tonight Show in the dust.

I'm also sure that this prospect was also on the minds of the NBC (Br)ass in their desperate try to find a new spot for Jay on NBC.
In their minds..giving Jay back the show at 11:30 was much more desirable than having a three way split...especially since both Letterman and Jay could easily run circles around poor NBC....poor COCO...and the poor COCO Nuts.
