Coroner on Haim: Natural Death, Not Drugs

5/4/2010 5:07 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Corey HaimTMZ has learned the L.A. County Coroner is about to release the report on Corey Haim's death ... and it was not caused by drugs ... it's listed as a natural death.

In lay terms, Corey had a bad heart and pneumonia.  As for drugs, there were traces of several drugs but nothing severe enough to contribute to Haim's death.

As for the causes of death .... diffuse alveolar damage -- respiratory distress.  In addition, the Coroner found hypertrophic cardiomyopathy -- the muscle in his heart thickened, making it hard for blood to flow.

And the Coroner also found a hardening of the arteries that supply blood to the heart.

Story developing...

Drugs, heredity, anything can cause this. It just goes to show that he didn't die of an overdose. But it's unfortunate that Brittany Murphy and Corey Haim died of a similar problem: untreated ailment.

Why can't you guys leave well enough alone? The coroner's report said he did not die of an overdose. It was NOT drugs. If he had Marijuana it would be in the report. It's NOT! He had a heart defect. Let the man rest in peace.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, HCM or HOCM, is a disease of the myocardium (the muscle of the heart) in which a portion of the myocardium is hypertrophied (thickened) without any obvious cause.[1][2][3][4][5][6] It is perhaps most famous as a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.[7] The occurrence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a significant cause of sudden unexpected cardiac death in any age group and as a cause of disabling cardiac symptoms.

Notable people

After the death of Marc-Vivien Foé of Cameroon during a 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup match, his autopsy revealed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.[38] Miklós "Miki" Fehér, a Hungarian football player who died during a match on January 25, 2004, also suffered from HCM.[39][40]

Other noted athletes believed or suspected to have died from HCM include NFL players Thomas Herrion, Mitch Frerotte, Damien Nash, Gaines Adams , and Derrick Faison; NBA players Reggie Lewis, Jason Collier, and Kevin Duckworth; NHL player Sergei Zholtok; baseball pitcher Joe Kennedy; long distance runner Ryan Shay; Loyola Marymount basketball star Hank Gathers; NFL Defensive End Kansas State football player Anthony Bates; OHL Windsor Spitfires captain Mickey Renaud; and Russian hockey star Alexei Cherepanov.

On December 10, 2008, NBA player Cuttino Mobley announced his retirement due to worsening HCM.[41] The disease also ended the career of former Wake Forest star Robert O'Kelley, after a mandatory EKG in Brazil discovered his condition in 2006.[42]

British comedy actor Leonard Rossiter died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in 1984 while waiting to go onstage at the Lyric Theatre, London.

Jesse Marunde, an American strongman, died of HCM in 2007 after a workout at his gym.

Most of you posters are mean-spirited and have no life.
Most of you have celebrity envy. That why you hide behind your PCs all day mulling over gossip sites and tearing down people you never will meet in your lifetime. When that bores you, you become stalkers, shills and flamers against your fellow humans elsewhere.

I guess California AG Jerry Brown owes Mrs. Haim and the public an apology.

Long-term use of alcohol or stimulant drugs can cause hardening of the arteries, which leads to high blood pressure and an enlarged heart.

Apparently, Corey was born with a heart problem. (not sure the exact term, but he had irregular heart beat) But I'm sure the fact that he was heavy into drugs, drastic changes in his weight, stress, etc...none of those are good for a healthy person's heart, let alone someone with a heart problem. How they would rule this a "natural death" is beyond me though. It makes me no sense. And what were the drugs in his system? I heard he was on anti depressants, so was that it? Pot? Muscle relaxant?
