Kim Kardashian -- Hello Kitty Controversy

4/19/2010 5:08 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Kim Kardashian is being ripped apart by her Twitter fans and PETA for the way she held a kitten in a photo she posted on her page -- but according to another animal rights group, it's not as bad as it seems.

Kim Karsdashian
We spoke to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals L.A., who told us "It is permissible to hold a kitten by his or her scruff for a brief amount of time" ... but warns, "the manner in which Ms. Kardashian is holding the kitten could lead others to mishandle animals."

According to sources on the set of the photo shoot where the pic was taken, Kim only held the cat by the scruff for a few seconds -- and did it with the owner and a vet's consent.

We're told the cat is "doing fine."

Come on TMZ! You are getting worse every day! You honestly believe she held up a cat to take a picture, but FIRST asked TWO people "hey can I grab this cat by it's neck?"

This women is trash. Her vagina appears to her the only marginally talented body part. Now, she is teaching her tween-aged fembots-in-training how to mishandle small animals. She is a real piece of work and not in a good way. People like her make the human race look bad.

Then PETA should be real angry at the mothers of Kittens. Who hold them in the same manner, but from the Mouth.

Some people are saying mother cats do this to their kittens? Yes, but does that big skank look like a mother cat to you? It's irresponsible and purely for a photo op. That's what makes it so sick.

You know if PETA is going to to bitch they might want to get some knowledge about what they are bitching about so they do not look MORE ignorant and biased than they already do

#157 Amber "Yes, but does that big skank look like a mother cat to you? It's irresponsible"

No she doesn't look like a mother cat, but I know tons of veterinarians who use this precise hold in order to NOT get bitten or scratched, it is neither cruel or inhumane to the cat. She's not swinging the cat around this way, she's not hanging it upside down by it's tail. I've personally had to rescue cats by grabbing them by the scruff of their neck to get them out of dangerous situations. I can assure you that the cat was not hurt by what I did and I was not hurt by the scared or already hurt animal (because they are in a prone position that way and cannot scratch or bite).

There is a nerve in the back of the neck that "paralyzes" kittens until they are moved. As soon as the back of the neck is released they get the feeling back and are perfectly fine. This is a kind of built in safety measure for when a mother cat needs to move the kittens in the wild, she needs them to be still so she doesn't drop them and quiet so predators won't hear them and find them...the feline in the photo is still a kitten, she has done NO harm to this animal. I don't even like this woman...but this has been seriously blown out of proportion.

Ok, this is just stupid! This is precisely how mother cats carry their kittens around, both wild large cats and small domestic cats....they don't have hands to carry them with obviously!!! This is NOT abusive behavior. Now, I wouldn't run around carrying this kitten like that for long periods of time...wouldn't swing it around like that either but it IS perfectly acceptable to pick up a cat in this manner. I have had to do it to prevent myself from being bitten or scratched by a scared cat in order to treat it. This is just stupid...it's a moment in time (that probably lasted for no more than a few seconds) that is being totally blown out of proportion. It's not as if she's got that kitten by it's tail holding it upside down...get a grip PETA and Twitter fans!
