Slipknot 911 -- 'Hypodermic Needle Next to His Bed'

5/26/2010 4:10 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The hotel employee who discovered the body of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray on Monday told the 911 operator he noticed a hypodermic needle and a bottle of pills in the musician's hotel room when he found the body.

In the 911 call, obtained by TMZ, the employee -- a maintenance worker at the Iowa hotel -- tells the operator that he suspects Paul died of a "drug overdose" and that it appeared that Paul had been in the room for "a while."

The employee also told the 911 operator that Paul's mother had called the hotel earlier in the day because she couldn't get a hold of her son.

Cops are still investigating Paul's death. Officials have stated that the death doesn't appear to be the result of foul play.

I hope I never need 911 in Iowa!!! That 911 Operator took a maintenance mans word about the status of the deceased...the only person who declares you dead is a doctor, not even EMTs can do that!!! I hope someone puts a sense of urgency in that 911 operators sphinxter.

The caller clearly said he wasn't sure if he was beyond help, wasn't touching him to see if he was cold...and the operator took THAT long to process the call? It's sad that the guy overdosed, but, I think someone at the police or fire dept should be listening to this and firing his a*s. Maybe he can say "would you like fries with that" faster than handling a 911 call. Horrible

Ditto on the 911 operator. They never seem to listen. Even when people calmly tell them things, they ask them again because they weren't listening. He seemed totally lethargic.

Also...he should have found out if the guy was "dying" or needed am ambulance...instead..he just took the word of the maintenance guy that he was "dead".

Where do they get these guys?

Umm, that 911 Operator needs to be fired. He has to be the most inept person alive, and he's manning the emergency system! He totaly wasnt paying attention and thankfully I do not live where that guy works cause i'd be dead by the time he decided to pay attention to my call!

I am so sick of hearing these terrible 911 operators. Having been one myself, that man is a disgrace. He isn't even paying attention to what the caller is saying and he is asking completely irrelevant questions. What if he had been in a coma, and not dead? Would the operator still have been so relaxed? What an idiot.

How do we find out who the operator is? What's the name of the Police Dept? He needs to be re-trained at the least.

um, "hold on just a sec", "can you repeat that", shouldn't the operator be asking are you sure? did you check his pulse, so not until after a minute later he asks, how old he looks, and then asks um, does it look like he's been there a while? dumb operator

I'm a crazy person...

To everyone upset about the "response time"...the CALLER told 911 the dude was dead. VERY dead. At that point it's not a "save his life" requiring an immediate response call...it's a "come clean up the mess" call. Dude OD'd. Are we gonna blame this on Conrad Murray too?

@gant77 either Johnston or Urbandale police dept would have taken that call. I don't think it would have reached the Des Moines 911 operator. Johnston is connected to Des Moines, but a different city. Urbandale is a suburb of Des Moines.

If he was such a good guy he would not have been doing drugs. Especially given the fact that he had a child on the way. Think about that one little boy. It is HIS fault he is dead. It is HIS fault his child will grow up without a father. Yeah, that has nice guy written all over it.
