Kentucky Basketball Players Subject of NCAA Probe

7/2/2010 6:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned the NCAA is taking an aggressive look at University of Kentucky basketball players -- past and current -- and their possible involvement with professional agents.

0701_uk_ncaa_logo_EX

According to a source who was interviewed by an NCAA investigator, the agency is interested in at least four players -- two current and two who were just drafted by NBA teams.

In the case of one former Wildcat, we're told the NCAA wants to know about his relationship with his current agent. We're told the investigator asked about multiple meetings the agent allegedly had with the player ... dating back to the player's senior year in high school.

The insinuation is the agent had an arrangement with the player before he went to Kentucky.

It is a violation of NCAA rules for a student athlete to receive anything of value from an agent -- or
to have any agreements, verbally or in writing, with an agent. Just ask USC, Reggie Bush or OJ Mayo.

Kentucky "declined comment" -- and a rep for the NCAA tells us, "The NCAA does not comment on current, pending or potential investigations."

Laughing at the Big Blew Nation

""I think the one player they are talking about is John Wall and his relationship with Lebron. Funny how Wall is apart of Lebron's agency now. UK is dirty and Calimari is the janitor with his hand in the toilet.
Posted at 7:25 AM on Jul 2, 2010 by Rob""

No, it's gonna be Brian Clifton, Wall's former AAU coach, same guy that got him into hot water at the beginning of last season.
The same guy, Wall's was suppose to use his PELL GRANT to pay back. The same guy who was a certified agent during part of Wall's recruitment...who is now, once again, part of John Wall's elite team and helped him maneuver his $25 million Reebok deal? Where's there's smoke, there's fire. I believe the NCAA is bound and determined to vacate UK's season one way or the other.

I usually count TMZ as one of the few credible entertainment news sources, but I really think this one is just a rumor. It is really interesting that no other sports news outlet has a story on this, nor were any "investigated" players mentioned by name. Considering the season that UK had (Conference Championship, Final Four, 2000 wins, whole starting line-up being drafted in the first round), you'd think this would be a HUGE topic of interest. I doubt players need alot of coaxing to come to UK, if you've seen their NBA-worthy practice facility, felt the great energy that Lexington has, or seen just how great they are treated here in Kentucky, you'd get it. They know how great UK fans are, how well we travel, etc. UK fans are/were well aware of the allegations against the coach before he was hired, but he was found innocent of the allegations, there were even sports casters from the national media that said it was unfortunate he was even brought into the mess to begin with. (I do however thinks it's laughable that someone would quote Bob Knight on his take of Calipari - Bob Knight is really the epitome of classy, honorable coaches right? He hates everything UK, having been an IU coach, so he's a bit biased). If the current "investigation" were to prove that the coach and players were less than honest, I'm sure the majority of UK fans would want the coach out ASAP - we DO NOT want something like that to tarnish our reputation. The anger and frustration is coming from fans that are tired of every GOOD thing UK does being undermined, not mentioned, or thrown under the bus. They have won more conference championships than anyone else in the SEC (44, 26 in tournament), have won SEVEN NCAA championships (coming in second the great UCLA John Wooden Program), have 2000 game wins (the most in NCAA basketball), etc. Even with all of this on our resume, it always seems that UK is the odd man out. If you don't live in Kentucky, you don't notice it, but it is pretty apparent when they are compared to other teams during normal sports shows or analyses and the other schools' entire history is mentioned, and in small letters it simply says UK won the conference championship that year. Who talked about Calipari donating 500K of his own money to Haiti victims? Or the basketball team raising a million? How about giving a signed game ball, and singing Happy Birthday to, a fan while they were out having dinner as a team? Again, that was just this past season. So yeah, it's understandable that we get SOOO mad when every body jumps on every little thing that might discredit the basketball team. We ONLY made it to the final four? How many schools do that? Oh yeah, FOUR!! Stop trying to take everything from us. We are ****y because we are like the kids on the playground that keep getting bullied no matter how often we stick up for ourselves, so we've finally had to put on a good offense, instead of defense. It get's old. Also, our players are not dumb - Patrick Patterson got his Bachelor's in 3 years, and John Wall left with a 3.5 GPA, and like many athletes, alot of their classes are taken in summer school and if anyone has ever taken a summer course in college, you know that it is HELL!

It really is utterly laughable how you Kentucky fans fall all over yourselves to defend the unequivocally unctuous John Calipari (slimiest coach in America) come hell or high water.

But the truth is, I suppose it's the perfect marriage. The school of dishonor ("Kentucky's Shame", racist Rupp) with the coach of dishonor.

Still, I just pity so many of you Kentucky fans, and here's why. Your sense of self-worth is so inextricably linked to the success of a freaking basketball team that you're willing to sell your souls for wins, regardless of the manner in which those wins were acquired. The truth is, you should be thoroughly embarrassed at the utter lack of integrity and chivalry that define Coach Sleaze's m.o., but again, your desire to win ball games and thereby legitimize your existence trumps good judgment.

In the meantime, try finding another hobby besides UK basketball. And sheep molestation.

Bullettoothtony,

Your complete ignorance in thinking that Kentucky's integrity is wrapped up in basketball is apalling! It completely goes back to my first post. Being HUGE fans of our basketball team does not mean we are proud of only that. We are more than Fort Knox, tobacco, and basketball. We are proud to be the home of Muhammed Ali, Diane Sawyer, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Rosemary Clooney, and many others. We are also proud to be the home of the greatest tradition in sports with the Kentucky Derby. Proud to be the state with the college that developed the HPV vaccine (UofL), the home of the pioneering doctors that developed and still perform, hand transplants. I really could go on and on. We are not dumb hicks who care only about basketball. There actually millions of people in Kentucky who couldn't care less about basketball. On the contrary you seem to be the small-minded one - thinking that because all you hear about Kentucky is basketball, there must not be more to the state than that. And you said it yourself - Coach Rupp's views were shameful, and we are ashamed of them (you'd have reason to say something if we WEREN'T ashamed), but to put Kentucky down for his views is the same as still persecuting Germany for Hitler's views. What is laughable is how much people HATE UK basketball, and rarely can someone name a reason why.

On behalf of all Kentuckians, do your homework next time, you classless, ignorant, stereotypical ****.

UK back on top? Give me a break. Getting players drafted by the NBA doesn't mean you are back on top. Eleven years and counting since your last championship. Win one first and then come back to me. The NCAA will come down on UK before there is ever a championship. But, I am sure Coach Cal will not have a clue what is going on in his program. He never does.

Oh wow...another "unnamed source". That carries a lot of credibility. Why bother print a story if you're afraid to name the source? I could easily say, according to an unnamed source, the author of this article practices incest and beastiality. I have nothing to prove the allegation other than an unnamed source told me. If you cannot name the source, then it's a fabrication.

NotFooled, your incomprehensibly obtuse analysis is superseded only by your laughable transparency. But your cacophonous warblings reached an epic level of failure when you mentioned Hitler. In that regard, you're a buffoon.

Hold steadfast to what you and your ilk do best--deplete valuable oxygen molecules as you expound upon inconsequential notions, and attempt to justify the history of your state flagship school's ignominy.

Until then, the length of this "discussion" is now way out of proportion to my interest in it.

Here endeth the lesson.

"UK back on top? UK had 4 draft picks and Cal couldn't even get them to the Final Four. First of all, the guy isn't that good of a coach. Second of all, he is a cheat and I still can't believe UK hired him.

Eventually UK is going to get what they should expect out of Cal, NCAA violations."

EXACTLY!! THESE UK FANS ARE RETARDED!! JEALOUS OF WHAT?? DRAFT PICKS?? HAHAHA...

Kentucky back on top? Five draftees and don't make it to the Final Four. That's nowhere near the top. Why would anyone hire Calipari? Seriously, you wanna win a championship so badly that you'll even take one that will get forfeited the following year? He recently said that he would take 4 kids getting drafted in one year over winning a championship. He's turning your school, operative word there being SCHOOL, into an NBA clearing house. How can anyone have pride in their team with a guy at the top who could care less about winning. No one from the Duke team got drafted this year, and they still won. And they will have that moment and those years forever. Not to mention a degree from Duke and life-long friends. Kentucky, the most storied basketball school of all time, with the hiring of John Calipari, is now a joke. Have some pride in yourselves and get this guy fired before you have to forfeit any more seasons.

Asking questions and being investigated are two different things. The NCAA will open an investigation only if it finds "reasonably reliable information" of a violation. If it does, it will issue a notice of inquiry to the university.

There's no notice of inquiry here. So just cool your heels, everyone. You look ridiculous going apoplectic over something you saw in a tabloid.
