McCourts Screwed After MLB Nixes $3 Billion Deal

6/20/2011 2:10 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

MLB commish Bud Selig just rejected a proposed $3 billion dollar TV deal between the Los Angeles Dodgers and FOX Sports ... a deal that was the basis for the divorce settlement between Frank and Jamie McCourt.

As TMZ previously reported, the McCourts reached a settlement to their divorce on Friday that was predicated on MLB signing off on the FOX deal.

Now, with the demise of the deal, the McCourts are back to square one -- PLUS it now seems unlikely the Dodgers will be able to pay its players and employees this month.

If the team misses payroll, Selig could seize operational control of the team and eventually force a sale of the team.

UPDATE: A rep for the Dodgers, on behalf of Frank McCourt, released a statement saying, in part, “Commissioner Selig’s letter of rejection is not only a disappointment, but worse, is potentially destructive to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Major League Baseball."

The rep continued, "Accordingly, we plan to explore vigorously our options and remedies with respect to Commissioner Selig’s rejection of the proposed FOX transaction and our commitment to protect the long-term best interests of the Los Angeles Dodgers.”

What a terrible decision by Major League Baseball. The Dodgers are in financial trouble and Bud Selig and the boys turn down $3 Billion Dollars. Stupid.

"17 year contract"

If that was an employment contract, it would have been unenforceable, nearly slavery.

The deal was a blatant attempt to get a lot of money now, by selling rights years and years away from now. Who knows what would happen with with values, inflation, etc. The McCourt's idea they could have gotten away with this shows how inept they are. A smart cheat would have aimed for a 10 year contract, and not be too greedy. Just greedy enough.

That's effed up! I'm not a big fan of the McCourts...but if they have a legit deal, which FOX and FM agree to, then they should be allowed to move forward. Obviously MLB wants the McCourts out....but to blatantly block deals sucks. MLB sucks anyway....so no love lost.

Ding dong the McCourt's are gone.

The settlement allowed for most of the Fox money to go to the McCourt's personally, and not the team. They appeared greedy and selfish in that settlement. Frank was using that settlement to be able to give all but one of the houses, plus 100 million to Leather Face.

The MLB wants nothing to two with these two. I agree with Selig, block the deal and get rid of them.

The reason Selig killed the deal is because the McCourts have been using the Dodgers as a personal bank account to furnish their lavish lifestyle. They have been siphoning off money that should be going back into the team to buy houses other personal assets. They don't want to give him the opportunity to use the huge lump sum paid up front on this contract for personal reasons. The McCourts are horrible owners and need to sell the team ASAP!

(And this is coming from a Giants fan)

This is total and complete b_u_l_l_s_h_i_t!!! It's clear that Bud is trying to steal the dodgers from Frank and TPTB are letting him. I guess ownership means nothing anymore in the USA.

Bud Selig hasn't done much right lately, but this is a great move on his end. Clearly he's been listening to what the fans have to say on this.
