BMX Star T.J. Lavin in Coma After Major Crash

10/15/2010 11:29 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

1015_tj_lavin_bmx_youtube_thumb T.J. Lavin -- a BMX star and host of MTV's "The Challenge" -- is currently in a medically induced coma after losing control of his bike and crashing during a jump at a BMX event last night.

TJ Lavin
Lavin was competing in a Dew Tour event in Las Vegas -- when he hit a dirt ramp, lost control, and slammed down onto the ground. Friends and crew workers immediately rushed to Lavin's side, but he didn't appear to be moving.

Lavin was rushed to nearby University Medical Center hospital ... where he was placed into a medically induced coma.

We're told Lavin is also experiencing brain swelling and is listed in critical condition.

UPDATE: A rep for MTV tells us,
“Our thoughts are with TJ. He is an important part of MTV’s extended family and we’re all praying for him."

As for Lavin's condition, a rep for the Dew Tour tells us, "he is in the intensive care unit and is currently stabilized."

Awww...truely a sport of adrenalineand like as no money can every pay anyone who is not into it, to just do it.

And...even as women today try to move into every male dominated job, this one they just don't seem to be applying for.

I can't tell by the video, so I am wondering if he was wearing a helmet.

And to "TheDude"- why don't you do some research before you make idiotic comments. There are PLENTY of females out there doing BMX and motorcross sports.

They should be using a fullface motorcyle helmet and a neck pad..showboating...than coma.He should be ok dirtfall and bike helmet and inducement than skull saw and drain tubes and brain feed tubes.Than later drain needles and EBS DBS if needed. But than getting back to full fuction could take two or three years.

WOW...All my best to TJ and his family...Praying for a quick recovery...TJ is a super nice guy, My 5 year old nephew went to a BMX camp this past summer where TJ and other BMX riders were teaching young kids how to ride...I really hope is going to be ok and recovers from this...

This is a very dangerous sport. People forget this. This is why you do not let your kids build a bike jump in the backyard. If you still don't understand, watch and replay until you do. This is a 33 yr old man was doing what he loved, and he knew the dangers.

What TMZ has also failed to tell you was that he fractured a rib or two and his wrist. He also fractured his eye socket. This information was given directly to people that were the sponsors here in Vegas from his Manager at 1:30 this morning when he was leaving the hospital, after talking to the trauma surgeon.
