Charlie Sheen's Dad: His Disease Is Like a Cancer

2/23/2011 10:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Charlie Sheen's father, Martin Sheen, says his son has a problem -- and it's as bad as cancer.

"He's an extraordinary man," Martin says of his son to Sky News, "He's doing well, we pray for him. If he had cancer, how would you treat him? This disease of addiction is a form of cancer. You have to have an equal measure of concern and love and lift him up."

Charlie himself doesn't appear too worried -- he was spotted on a yacht date with two "goddesses" Monday night.

Unfortunately, when you use the cancer defense it sounds like he has no choice in the matter - he just can't help himself. Call it a disease and no one has to be responsible for it. This way Martin and Charlie are off the hook in their own minds for Charlie's behavior.

Also, re: Charlie - why fight it. Buddy doesn't want to be sober - said he was sober for five years, and that it was boring. I don't like him, but I have to applaud him for his honesty. Therefore, go nuts, Charlie! I wish you well, but do what you gotta do! You'll flame out, but I've got a feeling you'll do so in style!

Really offensive to compare Charlie's bad behavior to cancer, cancer is not a choice.. unless he's really saying Charlie IS a cancer- a sick, depraved crackhead with no interest in getting better, not even for his kids.. dude needs to be sterilized maybe a lobotomy too, so sad for the kids not to have a real dad.

I think that Martin's remark is a step in the right direction because it recognizes the addition as a destructive and corrosive force rather than minimizing and even glamorizing it.

Charlie's life is spinning out of control, and unlike cancer, his addictive disease affects his very ability to make correct choices for himself. If Charlie does not get real help soon, he's dead!

Emilio was always my favorite "Brat Packer" over Lowe, Cruise, etc...He still has it! He was looking a bit washed out recently but he looks awesome here! Good for him! Let's not forget the Estevez clan is made up of THREE other siblings who have navigated growing up in Hollyweird just fine and without incident. Charlie (yes, Carlos) is the proverbial "black sheep" of this family...still don't get what makes him click, and ya know what? Don't want to, either! LOL. All Martin is saying is addiction IS a disease. The cancer analogy was unfortunate but anyone with half a brain should be able to read between the lines at what he was trying to say. Martin and family: I wish the best for you, even Charlie.

How dare you, how dare you compare your drugged out spawn to people who have or still are dealing with cancer!!!

You and every single Charlie Sheen supporter need to rot in hell because my mother, my boyfriend, my 18 month old neice and many others I know did not choose cancer or do they have the option to walk away from it!!

My brother is an alcholic and refuses to get help, so my answer to that is "I am done, I am not going to allow you to continue poisoning my family and I am not going to enable you anymore"!!

Anyone who has the balls to even compare him to a cancer patient is in need of a reality check and in need of human compassion!!

Charlie chooses to put drugs in his body, Charlie chooses to f*ck Porn stars and instead of cleaning himself up and getting back to work he chooses to party with s*** while many other people are at home not getting paid!!

Wow what a disgrace to the human race!

Martin Sheen is a father, and, along with the rest of the family, Charlie's mother, brothers and sister, the pain and agony they are going thru in their private lives is devastating. Perhaps Martin's choice of words, using cancer as a reference, wasn't the most appropriate, but it doesn't require beating him up for his choice of words. Give him a break. It is very hard to deal with addiction and watching someone in your family, who you love, destroy themselves. No words to describe it. No one can be helped unless they want it for themselves. Until that time comes, nothing happens. You can't want it for someone more than they want it for themselves. Charlie has to want to change, to take care of himself, and get appropriate help. Has to really hit bottom. Is in denial and, until he accepts and embraces what is wrong with him, if he is able to at all, nothing will change. He looks horrible - I was shocked at his appearance. If he looks that way on the outside, imagine what the inside looks like. He was a very good looking guy. He now looks like he is in his 60's or older. Haggard, unkempt, and almost cachetic. It is sad that Charlie doesn't want to admit he has a problem and turn his life around. Psych counseling, detox, path to becoming healthy again - nutrients, diet, alternative medicine and therapies, there is so much that can be done. I think he would be respected and appreciated, let alone bringing forth a wonderful example for all who have gone down this destructive path, and for younger, impressionable kids/adults a wake up call, for taking control of his own life and doing the right things for himself...... The TV show can incorporate same as the "new Charlie" - can still be a funny show, but change the path of is a negative reinforcement and not helping Charlie and not pleasant to watch portrayal of this being played out with looking at how terrible he looks. Needs help, not condemnation. Hopefully , people around him will support his full CAN be done.

Many cancers are the result of unhealthy behaviors one chooses to engage in:

Drinking too much --> pancreatic and liver cancer
Too much tanning --> skin cancer
Too many sexual partners --> penile, cervical & uterine cancer
Smoking --> lung cancer
Eating too much --> breast cancer
Taking certain medications --> a variety of cancers

In the October 8, 2010 Journal of Public Health article entitled "Global cancer incidence and mortality caused by behavior and infection", the authors Ott, Ullrich, Mascarenhas, and Stevens from the World Health Organization, 20 Avenue Appia, 1211 Geneva 27, Switzerland, said:

"The five leading behavioral and dietary risks-high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, physical inactivity, tobacco use and alcohol use-were responsible for 24% of new cancer cases and 30% of cancer deaths. Cancers with the largest proportions attributable to preventable risk factors were cervical cancer (100%) and lung cancer (71%)."

A number of other serious, sometimes deadly, diseases are likewise caused by behavior choices such as:

Liver failure (alcohol ingestion)
Heart disease (smoking & bad diet)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (smoking)
Emphysema (smoking)
AIDS & other venereal diseases (sex or sharing needles with infected persons)

In the sense that CS's problems are due to his own bad behavioral choices, his addiction is much many preventable cancers. Labelling something a "disease" does not relieve the person with that "disease" of responsibility for the condition.

I suspect many here are in denial as to the cause of theirloved one's cancers -- just like families of those addicted to drugs, alcohol, over-eating are in denial about their addiction.

The fact that Martin Sheen and other of CS's family members are speaking out about the nature of his problems is laudable. They are not trying to say CS isn't responsible for his addiction problems, they are trying to explain how difficult addiction problems are for the addict and that there is no simple "fix" to cure addiction.

I post this as someone who has experienced three different cancers to date, including two different types of behaviorally caused cancers -- two skin cancer doubtlessly caused by getting excess sun exposure in my youth.

What's wrong with you people???? Martin SHeen was making a comparison between two serious illness, that's all! Charlie SHeen has no control of his addiction. Cancer patients they can get treatment but Charlie Sheen is not aware how dangerous his illness is and he refuses to be treated. See the difference?

Sadly, there was a word omitted from a sentence in my earlier post.

The sentence should have read:

"In the sense that CS's problems are due to his own bad behavioral choices, his addiction is much LIKE many preventable cancers. Labelling something a "disease" does not relieve the person with that "disease" of responsibility for the condition."
