Fired by Aflac

Over Japan Tweets

3/14/2011 6:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Gilbert Gottfried was fired by Aflac from his gig as the voice of its duck mascot in the wake of his controversial series of tweets about the earthquake in Japan.

Gilbert Gottfried Fired Aflac
The company released a statement saying, "Gilbert’s recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac ... Aflac will immediately set plans in motion to conduct a nationwide casting call to find a new voice of the iconic Aflac Duck."

Attempts to reach Gottfried were not successful.

Hmmm... Japan is one of AFLAC's largest markets for it insurance products. Check it out.

Not a free speech or humor issue. Your spokesman doesn't offend your customers! Plus, who needs a "personality" to scream "AFLAC".

AFLAC does 75% of their business to households in Japan. It's a no brainier this dumb ass would be FIRED! Go hang yourself Gotfreak you'll never find an easy job like that again..

Bad taste yes, but he's a comedian, is it going to bring the dead back, no, and I guess if he's that stupid not fear the release of his services from AFLAC, than he's a bigger idiot than I thought

Freedom of speech requires the disciplined exercise of thought expressed. No excuse for some one who says they are comedian. Poor taste, poor judgement, and no charity. Thank you AFLAC.

Everyone take a breath. This is a horrible tragedy. But humor lightens the load. AFLAC doesn't want to offend the Japanese community and who can blame them. They could have easily said that those are Gilbert's opinions and doesn't reflect AFLAC's views. But since they are looking for a new voice.I'd like to audition. AAAAAAFFFFFFLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK.

This is a great thing! Those comments were out of line on so many diffrent levels. Freedom of speach? People like him need to have that right revoked.

what He said

everybody takes news differently not joking about it is not going to reverse the tsunami, it wont bring the people back.

AFLAC needs to chill and just be grateful they weren't involved instead of making it worse by firing people in this times.

he makes jokes like this frequently at tragic events or inappropriate times, you'd think he'd get it by now? Regardless, tasteless and just..why? I respect freedom of speech but honestly, not everything people think needs to be said, and no less broadcast on twitter as a high-profile celebrity. good on aflac for their swiftness.

I hate whenever anyone invokes "freedom of speech" as the basis to criticize a company for firing some dullard or person who makes reprehensible remarks. "Freedom of speech" applies to the government. A company is free to fire this person for uttering comments they believe is inconsistent with their values or the values of their customers. It is their call! Likewise, those who believe AFLAC erred, do not have to buy their products. In the meantime Gottfried can pedal his talents to anyone else who cares to hire him.

All you people saying "lighten up", are you kidding me? There's a time for jokes and laughter but horrific human tragedies are not one of those times. Mothers have lost their babies, husbands and wives have lost each other, family members all over the world, including here in the U.S. are trying desperately to find their loved ones, there is a high potential for nuclear fallout which will endanger the lives of millions in addition to those who have already died. No, this was a tasteless, inhumane, disgusting, putrid lack of compassion. Let me guess: you must be the same people on "team Charlie". Sick.

Pfft another comedian trying to hide behind the 'it's comedy' shield. People like that obviously has never been punched in the mouth enough so they continue to flap their gums. The right to free speech is protected but being an absolute moron isn't. **** that guy. No better than the Westboro Baptist Church ****s.

He has always done horrible jokes like this but how many times can a company back him up if he keeps doing it?!? He is an idiot for even thinking the way he does, on such tragic events he wants to put his name in it by saying such horrible jokes? I personally never appreciated the "dark" so called humor, nor his two cents on things. Good for AFLAC, he is too much of a liability.

Honestly, I'm getting sick and tired of people getting so uptight when a celebrity does something that's not "politically correct!" They all love going on TMZ to see people screw up but they're so uptight about someone making some jokes.
