Gilbert Gottfried

Fired by Aflac

Over Japan Tweets

3/14/2011 6:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Gilbert Gottfried was fired by Aflac from his gig as the voice of its duck mascot in the wake of his controversial series of tweets about the earthquake in Japan.

Gilbert Gottfried Fired Aflac
The company released a statement saying, "Gilbert’s recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac ... Aflac will immediately set plans in motion to conduct a nationwide casting call to find a new voice of the iconic Aflac Duck."

Attempts to reach Gottfried were not successful.

So when did we become so politically correct that comedians can make jokes???? I mean 50 Cent made the same kind of comments on his twitter and he isn't getting fired. People today are ridiculous!!!!

Jesus Christ people lighten up, he is a comedian. It's his job to find humor in anything. Pull your pampers out of your ass crack and lighten up.

He should have remembered where that check was coming from WHAT A FOOL!

Don't you know there is no such thing as free speech? It always comes with a price.

I didn't find the joke funny, but I also didn't find it offensive. Gilbert didn't make his jokes in his capacity as AFLAC's representative, so I think they were wrong to fire him.

AFLAC is the insurance for about 80% of Japanese people so... stands to reason that they wouldn't find this humor appropriate. It's not appropriate at all. Making jokes when an entire country is displaced, thousands are dead and many millions haven't had food, water or livable conditions since the quake/tsunami and now possible nuclear meltdown. Now is not the time. Jokes we not appropriate after 9-11, Haiti, Katrina... it's not an appropriate thing to joke about. If he should have gotten fire, I don't know. But the “jokes” he should have kept to himself.

I am doing a MAJOR happy dance here!

Gilbert GottFIRED (thanks to poster Jim for coming up with that gem!) is nothing more than an obnoxious, washed-up, irritating MORON whose "schtick" is gag-worthy. For those too young to remember him from SNL, just go to Wikipedia and read about his dismal 1980-81 season where he was barely used! Back then, he didn't do the squinty, screaming thing, thank God. I had NO idea he was the voice of the AFLAC duck until today, from reading this board.

I just sent AFLAC an email, congratulating them on their rapid response. There is NO place for this kind of crap, considering how utterly tragic the situation in Japan is. How anyone can even attempt a joke at a time like this is truly sub-human.

I admire this company for being so pro-active and making such a swift decision, instead of bumbling around like so many companies do when their spokespeople do stupid things! Way to go, AFLAC!!!

Feels good when the good guys win once in a while. Thank you.

What you need to remember is that Aflac has a large presence in Japan. The duck commercials appear over there as well though in Japan its rude to ignore someone so everyone talks to the duck but still a company with a large Japanese presence has to act immediately. This isn't about "lightening up" it's about business and the bottom line.

This guy is a creep anyway. He deserved what he got, that wasn't even low-class, it was no class.

Barry Limbaugh

Aflac is the largest insurer in Japan. Gottfried is just as stupid and pathetic as Sheen.

Never thought he was that funny anyway. Besides, in the words of Bill Hicks, "You do a commercial, you're off the artist list forever" (paraphrasing)
